Fuel cell hybrid vehicles (FCHVs) have become one of the most promising candidates for future transportation due to current energy supply problem and environmental problem. Fuel economy is the main issue in hybrid vehicles and it depends on the power management strategies. A rule-based power management strategy for an FCHV is presented in this paper. In order to evaluate the fuel economy of the rule-based strategy adequately, the initial battery state of charge (SOC) and final battery SOC have to be the same. To consider this point, the fuel economy evaluation method based on the relationship between delta SOC and delta fuel consumption and the method based on the optimal control are presented. The concepts of equivalent fuel consumption based on the two fuel economy evaluation methods are applied to this paper. The two methods are compared to each other on the rule-based power management strategy.

Electric Vehicles (EVs) have become huge issues these days because of energy resource and environmental problems. EVs have many outstanding advantages such as zero emission and independence from petroleum, but more importantly, it has the ability of recovering braking energy. In this research, an EV simulation program is created to study each EV component and the controller which is including a braking algorithm.

In HEV (hybrid electric vehicle) system, two or more power sources combine their output power together which is very important to effectively distribute power during vehicle operation. Some kinds of vehicle driving control strategies based on global optimization techniques, local optimization techniques, and the intelligent control strategy have been studied. In this paper, DP (Dynamic Programming) and fuzzy theory are both introduced and applied to two shaft parallel HEV and the control results are compared.

In a fuel cell hybrid vehicle (FCHV), the operating points of the fuel cell system (FCS) can be shifted to its high-efficiency region by using a battery and the total hydrogen consumption depends on power management strategies. Two types of power management strategies are presented in this paper and the concept of equivalent hydrogen consumption is applied to this study due to the difference between the initial and final SOC of the battery. The equivalent hydrogen consumption of each strategy is evaluated and compared to each other.
