한국 개신교 초기 선교 자료 연구의 의의 - 미 남감리회 선교사 기록을 중심으로 -

한국 개신교 초기에 선교사들이 한국에서 활동하면서 남긴 자료들은 당시 상황을 보다 다채롭게 이해하는 데 도움을 준다. 선교사들의 글 속에 담긴 이해나 견해들은 그들 각자가 지닌 배경은 물론, 그들과 만났던 한국인들과의 관계, 한국문화에 대한 나름의 체험, 격동기의 정치사회적 상황 속에서의 입장 등에 따라 다양하다. 그렇기에 선교사 자료들은 당시의 정황에 대한 보다 입체적인 재구성과 동시에 보다 미시적인 연구의 가능성도 높여 준다. 따라서 이의 집적과 분류, 번역과 데이터베이스화 등은 이 시대 한국 사회연구의 확대와 심화에 크게 기여할 것으로 판단된다. 추후 그러한 연구가 지닐 의미를 간략히 살펴보기 위해, 본고에서는 그간 다뤄지지 않았던 선교사 자료를 검토하여 제시한다. 본고에서 제시하는 자료들은 미국 에모리 대학에 소장된 미 남감리회(Methodist Episcopal Church, South) 소속 선교사 자료들로서, 총 세 종류인데, 그 중 첫 번째 자료인 J. O. J. 테일러의 기록들을 주로 다룬다. 테일러는 1918년부터 1923년까지 한국의 춘천과 시베리아에서 활동했던 선교사로서, 그의 서신과 보고서를 통해서는 특히 3.1만세운동 당시 서울과 지방 사람들의 모습, 태도, 인식 등에 대한 매우 다채로운 그림을 얻을 수 있으며, 지방과 시베리아에서의 경험담 속에서 당시 민중들의 생활상을 엿볼 수도 있다. 그는 또한 남감리회에서 파송한 첫 시베리아 선교사였는데, 러시아 내전 종전기의 블라디보스톡을 중심으로 한 시베리아의 모습 또한 기록에 남기고 있어 여러모로 근대 한국인 사회의 생활상 재구성에 요긴한 자료를 남긴 것으로 여겨진다. 이 외에도 상세히 다루지 않은 다른 두 종류의 자료는 테일러의 그것보다 훨씬 방대하여, 깊이 있는 자료 조사 및 연구가 이루어진다면 근현대 한국사회의 모습을 고찰하는 데 큰 도움이 될 것이다. 특히 한국의 개신교 초기는 서구와의 본격적 만남과 일제강점이 뒤얽힌 격동의 시간이자 한국의 현대와도 불가분의 관계에 있으므로, 이 시기의 다양한 이야기가 널리 발굴되고 깊이 연구되는 것은 지금 우리 스스로의 모습을 보다 깊이 이해하고 성찰하기 위한 의의 또한 있다고 할 수 있다. Various documents and records by early protestant missionaries to Korea, including diaries, formal/personal letters, photographs, and publications, help us better understand the then current situation. It is noteworthy that missionaries’ understandings and perspectives on Korean situation in such writings differ from each others’ according to their relationship with Koreans, cultural experience, sociopolitical context, as well as their distinct personal backgrounds. As a result, research on the missionary documents provide us new possibility for both multidimensional reconstruction and microscopic investigation of the then circumstance. By collecting, classifying, translating, and building a database on those missionary documents, therefore, it is well expected to contribute greatly in examining the then Korean society. In an attempt to offer a preview of such further research, this paper first aims to briefly review some missionary documents that have not been researched yet and provides its meaning to us. Among vast missionary archives of Methodist Episcopal Church, South, three materials at Emory University will be discussed here centering on James Oliver Jelks Taylor papers. As a missionary dispatched to Chuncheon(ChoonChun, according to Taylor’s Romanization), Korea, and Siberia from 1918 to 1923, Taylor portrayed his diverse interests on Korean people in Seoul and other area especially during the March First Independent Movement and described life of commoners in the regions throughout his personal letters and official reports. Moreover, as the first missionary of Methodist Episcopal Church, South, who had been sent to Koreans in Siberia, he left precious historical materials to reconstruct modern Korean history in Vladivostok and Siberia at around the end of Russian Civil War. Two other papers that were only briefly discussed in this article are much greater than the Taylor’s in its volume and are believed to provide valuable insights to study modern and contemporary Korean history if only examined further in the near future. Considering that the history of early Protestantism in Korea was an upheaval period when we encountered Western civilization for the first time and experienced Japanese colonial era, studies on missionary documents of the times will enable us comprehend and reflect on our history deeper and better.

Recently, research on integrated automation technology for intelligent mission support systems for submarines is being actively conducted in order to maximize combat performance based on future cutting-edge technologies in the submarine system. In particular, advanced technology for submarine torpedo counter measure tactics studies counter measure tactics according to changes in the performance of enemy torpedoes and decoy aircraft. In general, the speed of a torpedo is much faster than that of a submarine, so quick and accurate calculations are necessary because it is an emergency situation. Accordingly, in this paper, we apply reinforcement learning, one of the machine learning methods, to calculate enemy torpedo counter measure tactics that can respond to any situation and propose a torpedo counter measure tactic algorithm that can select an evasive course for the ship. We apply a reinforcement learning algorithm that can adapt to various variables that may occur in the maritime environment, and through this, we evaluate the excellence of the algorithm and present its applicability to torpedo counter measure tactics in an actual maritime environment.
