Partially premixed charge compression ignition combustion (pPCCI) was obtained using early injection strategy and the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) in a direct injection diesel engine. The results of an injection swept experiment showed the pPCCI combustion regime could be obtained using a baseline injector, which had an injection angle of 146° and 8 nozzle holes. The burn duration analysis was used to verify the pPCCI combustion, which appeared to be very short in the pPCCI combustion. The pPCCI combustion with an injection timing of 40° CA (crank angle) BTDC (before top dead center) could be achieved when the EGR was applied in a range of the EGR rate from 0% to 40%. Two types of different injectors were employed to investigate the effect of the injection angle and the number of nozzle holes on the pPCCI combustion. One had an injection angle of 70° and 8 nozzle holes, the other had an injection angle of 70° and 14 nozzle holes. The indicated mean effective pressure for both injectors with a narrow injection angle (70°) was higher than that for the baseline injector. When the injector with an injection angle of 70° and 14 nozzle holes had low level of unburned hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions.

The characteristics of particulate matters (PM) from an exhaust gas for conventional and low temperature diesel combustion (LTC) in a compression ignition engine was experimentally investigated by the elemental, thermogravimetric analysis. Morphology of PM was also studied by the transmission electron microscopy. PM for LTC shows that it contains more volatile hydrocarbons, which can be easily evaporated than conventional regime. PM for LTC is comprised of smaller primary particles.
