In the field of yarn dyeing, the method taken most generally is a type of package dyeing which uses a package of cheeses stacked on a spindle made of a perforated tube. For this kind of cheese dyers, leveling dyeing has been reported as the most vital problem to be solved due to the difficulty of dye penetration through cheeses, the color difference resulting from a pressure loss in the spindle and irregular dye supply into each spindle. The present study is focused on the development of new spindle design to ensure the uniform supply of dyeing liquid from the spindle to the cheese stack. The axisymmetric, incompressible, Navier-Stokes equations are solved for several spindle configurations, using a fully implicit finite volume scheme. The results obtained show that the uniformity of dye supply can be enhanced by using either a cone type spindle with a uniform array of porous holes or a straight spindle with a non-uniform one.
