High cost of crude oil imposes a heavy burden on vehicle users. Thus, much efforts are given to the development of alternative energies in advanced countries as well as our country. Among them, fuel cell is emerged as the most promising one for transportation. There is no harmful emission with hydrogen energy of which sources are abundant on the earth. The use of both fuel cell with self-generating system and electromanetic guidance system will be able to make urban track rapid transit operate even in the city areas of very limited infrastructure space with flexibility and on time accessibility. The high efficiency is also expected with clean environment and easy riding for both the old and the handicapped.

Railroad has been one of major public transportations with the advantages of safety and schedule accuracy. However, the sustainable development will be the first principle in order to save the earth environment in the future, and the only transportation that satisfies it can continuously survive. Transportation has caused air pollution severely. Thus, the most environment-friendly means of transport should be chosen to maintain clean environment in the 21st century. Railroad is currently the best choice to fulfill the mission. But, the overall railroad technologies should be developed in consideration of clean environment to be a future leading transportation.

Power of fuel cell tram is supplied by only fuel cell system or hybrid system of fuel cell and battery/super capacity. Fuel cell is operated by hydrogen, which is fed directly from hydrogen tank or by reforming gasoline or methanol into hydrogen. Power system is preferred with hybrid of fuel cell and battery/super capacity since it improves total energy efficiency through interaction of hybrid components and restores energy regenerated by braking. Also, power supply system by fuel cell hybrid should be designed to output optimum energy efficiency depending on driving mode of fuel cell tram.

Underframes of rolling stock structure are made of hot rolled steel of SS400 or SM490A. While these underframe steels are designed to satisfy the mechanical requirements, theircorrosion behavior also should taken into account. Underframes are coated to prevent corrosion, but they are often defected by external factors to result in local corrosion which may cause the weakness of mechanical strength. Thus, the corrosion of underframe steels was examined through atmospheric corrosion test to estimate service life and safety.

Steel sleepers have largely two types, nand Y types, depending on their shapes and are used mostly in Europe since 1980. The sleepers are made of steel of high strength and toughness, and thus recycling is completely possible up to 100%. Since the weight is almost one quarter and the less of that of concrete sleeper, the cost for delivery is saved. In addition, high economical efficiency is expected from the extended maintenance intervals. The n type is used in Europe, Australia, mideast Asia and north America whereas the Y type in Germany. Steel sleeper with high functionality is domestically developed through the comparison of characteristics with the shapes.

Railway tracks are repeatedly overstressed and damaged owing to increase in passing tonnage and numerous contact cycles between wheels of train and rails. In order to ensure safe train operation, heat-treated rails are used in addition to regular inspection and maintenance of these rails. Normal rails were treated using ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM) to strengthen the surface of rails. A few changes in surface properties were detected with respect to hardness and compressive residual stress after UNSM treatment. Wear and rolling contact fatigue tests were performed using rails whose surfaces were hardened by UNSM and heat-treated rails. The amount of wear and fatigue life cycles were measured to estimate the effect of UNSM on the rail material. The material of the surface-hardened rail showed improved wear and rolling contact fatigue properties.

Both traffic congestion and air pollution in the metropolitan area can be greatly relieved by promoting the use of public transportation with zero emission system. Bus and subway are very convenient means for the people moving in the route areas. But they are not enough to satisfy handicapped or old people to have access to them and also do not solve environmental problems completely. New vehicle system, fuel cell track rapid transit, will be introduced as a countermeasure for such problems in the present paper.

The bimodal tram was designed to drive on the dedicated track as well as on the public road. The position and speed are automatically controlled on the dedicated track by the onboard computer whereas they are manually controlled by driver like motor vehicles on the public road. The ride comfort the passengers feel and the effect of the vibration generated during driving on the passenger's health comfortableness and motion sickness were evaluated with driving the bimodal tram prototype in automatic and manual mode respectively. The test was done in automatic mode on the test track with various load conditions while it was done in manual mode on the public road with empty load.
