Vol.16 No.2

(Background and Purpose) Contrary to expectations that Coronavirus Disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic will end in a short time, as it continues to spread all over the world, non-face-to-face education in schools and most educational institutions is prolonged. Accordingly, people are seeking to settle down in online space out of face-to-face education. In particular, there is an opportunity to study the state-of-the-art technology without time and space constraints, as various information from home and abroad is transmitted. However, it is difficult for the hearing impaired to access Internet information itself, and the support system for it is not well established, so it is rarely used actively. Therefore, it is time for research to establish an environment in which the hearing impaired can create a convenient living territory for the impaired party in the cutting edge field. (Method) In this study it tries to look into how the hearing impaired online education is currently progressed, examine problems in this area in terms of universal design, and suggest plans to build an effective environment. (Results) Most sign language videos show a sign language interpreter in one corner of the screen. However, the sign language is a non-manual language, and its meaning should be conveyed not only through hand gestures but also through facial expressions. Therefore, learning effects can be obtained only when the size of the sign language screen is larger. In particular, it will be effective to develop and actively use emoticons since there is no reluctance for the young hearing impaired to use as they are used a lot for text conversations, complement the limitations of communication, and are highly attentive. A total communication approach to educate the hearing impaired is prominent and more effective than the case of using only a single medium through a single-sensory. Since spoken language, sign language, subtitles, and emoticons are used at the same time, it is good to present a variety of ways for the hearing impaired to enhance the understanding to make their own choices. If education based on virtual reality (VR) is provided for the hearing impaired, it can be a new way to enhance their ability through engagement and various stimulations. If their abilities are enhanced through education based on VR experience, employment in high-tech fields will be possible. (Conclusions) For the hearing impaired, it is true that challenges to the high-tech field is not easy, and there are very few of them engaged in it. However, if effective and diverse forms of education are supported, the hearing impaired will be able to access the cutting-edge field and live their lives more actively.

Vol.15 No.2

(Background and Purpose) Traditional markets are located in the center of the region and are a living history that retains the lives of ordinary people. However, modern traditional markets are on the verge of disappearing due to changes in consumption patterns, outdated facilities and the aging of shopkeepers. A Youth Mall is a project to foster young merchants run by Small Enterprise and Market Service, which can provide vitality to traditional markets in crisis and contribute to job creation for young people out of occupation. The purpose of this study is to identify the current status of a Youth Forest, one of the Youth Mall created three years ago in the Tong Bok market in Pyeongtaek, and explore ways to boost it. (Method) The study consists of five chapters in total. Chapter 2 identifies problems in traditional markets through a theoretical approach. Chapter 3 understands the concept of the Youth Mall in traditional markets and recognizes the importance of making characters of it. Chapter 4 analyzes the Youth Forest in the Tong Bok market and designs a character that can represent the identity of it and can variously be utilized in marketing promotion. Finally, chapter 5 concludes and summarizes the results of the study overall. (Results) The immediate challenge for the Youth Forest is to build a differentiated brand image and strengthen its expertise by promoting brand marketing. As a result, the study carried out a character design to contribute to revitalizing the local business district and creating jobs for young people through successful start-ups and increased sales of young merchants in the Youth Forest. The character was designed with a focus on enhancing the added value of products and using them in marketing to promote sales and transform into a young brand image. (Conclusions) The conclusions of the study are as follows: First, the Youth Mall is beneficial to both traditional markets and young retailers, considering that it has emerged as the biggest countermeasure of merchant aging, which brings new vitality to the traditional markets and helps young people to achieve their dreams through start-ups. Second, characters build the identity of the Youth Forest and give credibility to visitors by continuously promoting it to residents and outsiders with various promotions. Third, the Youth Forest can be competitive only when it operates in different ways than former traditional markets. Selecting an item that can be applied to the 4th industrial revolution, which can provide a hands-on experience beyond just sales to customers, can induce periodic visits.

Vol.3 No.1

It is very difficult for the visually impaired person to reach his (her) destination or distinguish things without any help of healthy people, and these facts could be a stumbling block in uniting our society. But, with the signs made by universal design, the handicaped could move more conveniently and independently. Social problems -like industrial disaster, traffic accidents and poverty -make the number of the handicapped increase. so there is a prevailing opinion that our society should take care of the disabled, thus interests in universal design focusing on welfare for the handicapped are increasing. Universal design is not only for the handicapped but both for the handicapped and non-handicapped. This study tried to make a specialty of examples on the concrete and problems applicable by signs of universal design for the visually impaired person. Signs set by a view from the healthy people without understanding the disabled could not be of help and even be a stumbling block in the public. This study tried to present methods to make environment of welfare society through the specific ways of convenient facilities, principles and data, based on the individuality of the visually impaired person.

Vol.13 No.6

(Background and Purpose) Attempts have recently been made to revitalize traditional markets. In particular, public design has started to allow local residents to interact with such markets. Traditional markets are not only located at the center of the region but also in important places where cities represent their own identities and cultural values. Countries called the “culture advanced nations” are helping to improve the environment in order to enhance cultural competitiveness and value in traditional regional markets. This study focuses on foreign cases of successful traditional markets in public design and analyzes representative markets in Korea. (Method) The study is conducted as follows. The importance of traditional markets and the problem of their conversion into slums are examined in Chapter 2. A theoretical notion of public design and cases of improving slums with the concept of CEPTED are investigated in Chapter 3. Impacts of public design approaches on regional activation and traditional market revitalization are analyzed by investigating overseas cases in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 summarizes the results and the significance of the study. Field studies and a literature survey of foreign markets are used in this research. (Results) Public design has steadily proven its effectiveness in solving social problems. The achievement of the CPTED Public Design case is significant in that the design work has resulted in an emotional recovery that brings human pride, honor, and the hope and courage of life. (Conclusions) Exemplary traditional markets that satisfy consumers by implementing local characteristics and public design are analyzed. The United States' Chelsea Market, Queen's Market, Canada's Grandville Island, Britain's Covent Garden, and the Netherlands' Market Hall are among the most popular. Namdaemun and Pusan International Market in Korea have inadequate facilities and lack proper sanitation because they were established organically and have only been minimally maintained. The environments of these markets are not suitable for consumers, so the development should be systematically executed from a public design perspective to maintain and develop tradition while satisfying visitors both at home and abroad. Dongdaemun Market has modernized its facilities after large enterprises entered, but lacks the emotional space that could allow shoppers to experience the culture of traditional markets. Therefore, a public design approach based on differentiation and the sense of unity is required. Efforts to save the identity of traditional markets are not only aimed at vitalizing commercial space to increase sales. Cultural activities and space marketing approaches are highly useful for activating a region for local consumers.

Vol.14 No.3

(Background and Purpose) It is important for children to develop mathematical abilities necessary to understand basic concepts of mathematics, develop thinking skills, and resolve individual and social problems creatively. However, it is difficult for them to achieve those goals and resolve those problems by relying only to school education. Thus, we intend to create a math experience exhibition hall as an alternative solution for creative mathematics education. (Method) This study was intended to understand children through literature review and designed an effective exhibition planning. Chapter 2 includes a theoretical examination of children’s experiential exhibition hall. Chapter 3 presents examination of the measures for exhibition in connection with the planning of experiential exhibition hall. Chapter 4 presents specific plans, such as the plan on the line of traffic flows and exhibition operation programs, while looking into the design planning of children’s mathematics experiential exhibition. Chapter 5 draws drew conclusions, summarizing the findings and implications of this study. (Results) It would be effective to plan the experiential exhibition on the basis of Piaget’s stages of children's cognitive development. The experiential exhibition would need to be designed in such a way that children can participate spontaneously with pleasure by taking the degree of psychological development of children into consideration. Edutainment, based on amusement that arouses interest, allows the user to be immersed in learning with the spirit of challenge, rather than the rigid structure of cramming education. The theme of the exhibition was based on four 4 themes. This area was planned to increase the immersion of children of the upper grades through gamification in order to ensure the effectiveness. (Conclusions) The conclusions were drawn from this study as below: First, the mathematics experiential exhibition hall was planned as an entertainment type uniquely suited for various experiences of children based on their cognitive development, thus ensuring that they could be fully immersed. Second, various exhibition methods for exhibitions in children's experiential hall were researched and planned. The exhibition theme consisted of four 4 sub-themes which could induce children to think from the perspective of mathematics, understand the figures, analyze the properties of numbers, and imagine them through the prism of mathematics. Third, the operation of the exhibition hall was planned with a focus on simplicity and promotion of intuitive thinking by children. The exhibition system was planned as a modular structure that could be updated through assembly and dismantling at any time, thus ensuring the changeability flexibility of the exhibition space. A very important educational impact can be anticipated if children, the leaders of future society, are able to comprehend mathematical concepts without aversion. Based on the results of this study, succeeding studies should be conducted which can contribute to the diversification and promotion of children’s experiential hall.

Vol.10 No.6

(Background and Purpose) A traditional market is a historical place that reminds us of the joys and sorrows of past. Further, it is a sociocultural environment where local and foreign visitors interact, exchange, and create their own culture together. This study analyzes the appropriateness of applying a universal design to strengthen the competitiveness of the traditional market, evaluates the utilization of space, and highlights its problem. Adequate facilities should be provided for the visitors, under the unequal physical conditions, to allow them to fully enjoy their shopping in a traditional market. (Method) This study proceeded with a literature research and field study. The second chapter discusses the theoretical research on the traditional market and the reason its “placeness ” should remain socially and culturally important to us. The third chapter analyzes the concept, features, and range of the applications of the universal design in the traditional market. The fourth chapter suggests the elements to be applied to the universal design by evaluating the field survey conducted at Namdaemun market in Seoul, South Korea. The fifth chapter summarizes the results and discusses the significance of this study. (Results) The overall sales at the traditional market hardly increased, as modernizing the space by setting up the arcade indiscriminately and reserving the parking lots were not enough to boost sales. Moreover, it was difficult to reorient the consumers who were already accustomed to large-scale distributors, to the traditional market without arranging for the conveniences that could satisfy them and converting their recognition attitudes for the traditional market. The universal design aimed to design ”what is available and easy for everyone to use,” regardless of consumers` age or physical and psychological state. In other words, even though the facility was designed for exceptional groups such as the old, expectant mothers, and foreigners, it would eventually provide conveniences for everyone if it were used by all groups without exclusivity. (Conclusions) This study leads to several conclusions. First, the facilities in the traditional market need to be expanded in accordance with the universal design for aging retailers , dominant old customers, pregnant women, children, foreigners, and the disabled. Second, the general idea behind the universal design is not to provide “special consideration” for exceptional groups, but to guarantee basic, equal human rights to everyone. To this end, facilities should be designed to make the most of the traditional market`s characteristics, not indiscriminately modernize it. Third, the result of the field study reveals that no special consideration was given to consumers in the design of the Namdaemun market. The level of customer satisfaction with the space increases when going upstairs. Further, the current market situation becomes clear through installing elevators, handicapped restrooms, and sign systems for various customers, as seen in the Namdaemun Theater, which was recently renovated.
