In this study, the authors carried out experiments and numerical simulations in order to clarify the pressure pulsation characteristics in multiple-delivery rotating-cam and stationary-cylinder type radial piston pumps. Also, a tee filter was applied to the pump in order to mitigate the pressure pulsation. Through the experiments and simulations, it was known that pressure pulsation with a magnitude higher than 40% of the mean load pressure could occur in the pump used in the experiments. Moreover, it was confirmed that a tee filter designed in this study could effectively mitigate the pressure pulsation.

Multi-delivery type radial piston pump is a special type of radial pump. In The multi-delivery type pump, unlike general radial piston type pumps, each piston delivers fluid to the actuator that is separately alloted to the piston. During period of the piston actuation, i.e. a suction stroke, there is no fluid delivery from the piston. And also even during the delivery stroke, the piston speed varies with sinusoidal pattern. Therefore, severe pressure pulsation may arise in the delivery lines. In this study, the authors investigate the mechanism of pressure pulsation in the pump through experiments and simulations. In addition, try the application of a pulsation filter to mitigate pulsation.

In the beginning of this study, pressure in a cylinder and flowrate from a cylinder of a rotating-cam and fixed-cylinder type radial piston pump are investigated through numerical simulations, so that the simulation results might be utilized as basements for examining physical phenomena occurring in the pump assembly. Then, for supplying basic knowledge on pump design, pressure and flow characteristics of a pump assembly under the variations of major design parameters are investigated through numerical simulations. Through the simulations, it is shown that the simulation program suggested in this study can be utilized for the design of the radial piston pump.
