Fundamental studies on natural gas combustion and flame structure are done. Using one dimensional freely propagating premixed flame model and detailed chemical kinetics, flame characteristics of natural gas combustion are observed. Among many considerable factors in numerical study. the effect of grid number and chemistry mechanism on calculated results is tested. Through the calculation, it is found that sufficient number of grid points is needed to have grid independent solutions and also that the reaction mechanism used in the model should be accurate. With a reaction mechanism specially developed for natural gas combustion. the effects of variation in fuel composition and<br/> . pressure change on flame characteristics are studied and general relation is made.<br/>
APPLICATION OF COSTAIR TECHNOLOGY IN REGENERATIVE COMBUSTION SYSTEM FOR CLEAN EXHAUST

The innovative combustion technique of continuous staged air (COSTAIR) served as a basis for the development of newly developed regenerative burner. Existing regenerative burner in which a ceramic material is used as a heat storage medium is used for raising the temperature of combustion air for better heating potential of flue gases and reduction of fuel consumption. In this paper a numerical study has done to visualize the effect of introducing staged combustion air (another factor for enhancing efficiency) rather in bulk form in existing regenerative burners to increase the mixing property. It is analyzed it is effective in reducing all above factors along with NOx better. Due to proper mixing, temperature distribution is found to be uniform and heat transfer characteristics is also enhanced.

Due to the complaints on the emission gases from diesel locomotives, the diesel locomotives are replaced by electric locomotives, resulting in the decrease of diesel locomotives in Korea. However, the emission gases from diesel locomotives have become serious environmental concern at stations and car depots. In this study, a diesel particluate filter (DPF) for diesel locomotive was developed in order to reduce the emission gases. The concentration of nano particulate matters before and after the DPF was analyzed using a SMPS (Scanning mobility particle sizer) and MOUDI (Micro orifice uniform deposited impactor) to evaluate the performance of DPF in particulate matters removal.
COMPUTATIONAL STUDY OF DIFFERENT FACTORS IN NOx FORMATION

NOx formation during the combustion process occurs mainly through the oxidation of nitrogen in the combustion air (thermal NOx) and through oxidation of nitrogen with the fuel (prompt NOx). In this paper a numerical simulation is carried out to investigate one of the way to reduce the thermal NOx by the increase of the flame lift-off length for the lowering of peak flame temperature which is considered the main cause of thermal NOx. The flame lift-off length was analyzed by temperature contours and this length was found to be influenced by several factors such as fuel injection velocity, gas pressure, air temperature and fuel type. Different orifice diameters (1.0, 0.85, 0.65 ㎜) in an injection nozzle were used for this purpose using CFD software "FLUENT". The fuel injection velocities were 150, 100, 80 and 50 m/sec. It was observed that the NOx formation was reduced as the flame lift-off length increases with increased injection pressure, decreased orifice diameter, decreased gas pressure (back pressure).

Flame characteristics and NO emission behavior in CH4/air-air premixed counterflow flames with applying FIR and FGR with CO₂ and H₂O were investigated numerically by varying the ratios of FIR and FGR as well as global strain rate. Chemical effects of added CO₂ and H₂O via FIR and FGR were analyzed through comparing flame characteristics and NO behaviors from real species(CO₂ and H₂O) with those from their artificial species(XCO₂ and XH₂O) which have the same thermochemical, radiative, and transport properties to those for the real species. The results showed that flame temperature and NO emission with FIR varied much more sensitively than that with FGR. Those varied little irrespective of adding CO₂, H₂O, and their artificial species to the fuel stream via FIR. However, Those were varied complicatedly by chemical effects of added CO₂ and H₂O via FGR. Detailed analyses for them were made and discussed.

Experimental study on pyrolysis of polymeric refuse was performed. Waste tires, waste plastics were selected as test materials for pyrolysis experiment, and their compositions, pyrolytic characteristics etc. were investigated. Shredded waste tire and waste plastics were pyrolysed in the He atmosphere. The compositions and properties of gaseous product was examined under different pyrolysis temperature (up to 700℃). Gaseous products increased until pyrolysis temperature reached about 500℃ after which there was decreased.
