The characteristics of binderless briquettes for dried low-rank coal was studied in this work. Two kinds of Indonesian coals were used to briquette after drying them in electric oven. The characteristics of briquettes have been examined by moisture contents, particle size, hydraulic force, and storing period. The optimum moisture contents of briquettes were observed at between 10 wt% and 15 wt%. The strength of coal briquette was stronger as particle size became smaller. The strength of coal briquette was proportional to the hydraulic force under 300 kN, whereas there was little difference among the briquettes made at more than 300 kN of hydraulic force. The strength of briquettes sharply decreased for a week after produced, and then showed the tendency of converging. The results from this work can be a useful guideline of manufacturing and managing upgraded coal briquettes.

In this research, moving bed adsorption and highly concentrated desorption technology was developed for the treatment of multi-component volatile organic compounds. By applying the moving bed adsorption and desorption technology, the competitive adsorption phenomena, which occur when the multi-component volatile organic compounds are adsorbed, can be controlled by adjusting the moving speed of the adsorbent. In addition, the adsorbents can be used for a long time by regeneration. The moving bed adsorption and desorption experiments were carried out 30 times using coconut-based activated carbon to remove water soluble solvents. The adsorption performance was maintained above 95%, resulting in a loss of only about 3% of adsorbents during the experiments. The concentrated ratio of the desorption gas reached 96 times of the concentration of the inlet gas. It is expected to solve problems such as the maintenance of the fixed bed adsorption towers used in small company and replacement costs of adsorbents through the moving bed adsorption and desorption technology.

Fry-drying of coal slurry is one of the upgrading low rank coal processes. It consists of slurry mixing, slurry dewatering, solvent recovery and briquetting. Cost estimation and economic feasibility are examined for the upgrading low rank coal process based on capacity of 1 million ton/yr. In case that investment costs are $100,000,000, discount rate is 12%, and service life is 20 years, the results of economic analysis are enough to satisfy the evaluation criteria of investment such as IRR, B/C ratio, NPV and discounted payback period. According to sensitivity analysis, investment value are very sensitive to raw material cost and product price. Since the bituminous coal price is currently soaring, it is expected that the investment value will increase more and more.

5 kg/hr 벤치규모 기류건조기를 이용한 고수분 석탄의 건조 특성을 알아보았다. 도착시료 기준으로 원료 석탄의 수분 함량 및 발열량은 각각 29.74 wt%, 4,270 kcal/kg이다. 가스유입온도 및 가스유입속도는 각각 400~600 ℃ 및 10~20m/sec이다. 원료 석탄의 입자크기는 100~2,000 μm로 분쇄 및 분급하였다. 원료석탄의 수분제거율은 가스유입온도는 증가하고 가스유입속도는 감소할수록 급격하게 증가하였다. 건조석탄의 발열량은 5,100~5,900 kcal/kg으로 증가하였다. 기류건조를 통한 고수분 석탄 표면에서의 발생하는 화학적인 변화를 알아보기 위하여 FT-IR 스펙트럼 분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과 하이드록실, 카르복실 및 카보닐 피크에서 주요한 변화가 일어나는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
