This study involves several measurement techniques to analyze swirl flow in 'a four-valve HSDI 2.0L diesel engine; swirl meter measurements and LDV measurements. Flow characteristics of a four-valve cylinder head were examined in a steady test rig for different SCV angles to quantity swirl ratio. Then the measurement of swirl mean velocity and turbulence intensity have been made for motoring condition(500,800rpm) using a laser Doppler velocimetry system which was applied in backward scattering method from top-view and bottom-view. This study also analysed some parameters of swirl ratio, swirl averaging velocity. Obtained results about the optimal intake port configuration are expected to be a suitable guide line in the analysis of the swirl flow characteristics.

Numerical and experimental studies are performed to investigate the effect of the underbody shape of the simplified road vehicle on drag and lift. Four different vehicle models with front and rear slanted variations at the lower surface are used in this study. Cases with a slanted underbody surface at front have smaller drag than those without a slanted surface. Also, cases with a slanted underbody surface at rear have smaller lift than those without a slanted surface. Pressure distributions along the model surfaces and velocity fields at the wake region are examined in detail. In general, numerical solutions are in agreement with experimental results.<br/>

In this paper three-dimensional external airflow around road vehicle models was numerically studied to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics. FVM based on a general curvilinear coordinate system was used to solve the governing equations. The drag coefficients by the calculation were about 40-50% higher than the experimental values.<br/>

To understand in-cylinder flow characteristics in a lean bum engine. flow experiments under steady conditions without a piston are carried out. Three-dimensional velocity fields at various valve lifts are measured using an LDV. Non-dimensional swirls for the standard and helical ports are obtained from the measured velocities and compared.<br/>
