The allusion is divided into trope[比] and treating precedent[用事] in Jiaoran’s Statutes of Poetry[詩式]. In this study we found that the allusion would be a trope when there is a corresponding relationship between the allusion and the poetic self, and it would be a treating precedent when there is only an allusion enumerated in a poetry. The allusion as a trope is classified into metaphor and metonymy. The conceptual metaphor “One’s behavior is a behavior of the great names in the past.” and the conceptual metonymy “A person replaces the group he belongs to.”, “The music player replaces his instrument.” are used as tropes in the poetry. Findings in this study are expected to be the key standard for understanding the classification of poetry in Statutes of Poetry.

The existing readings of “Tuju(兎?)” were unnatural because they considered the first halves of each stanza as the scene of a net for catching rabbits cast by brave soldiers. Whereas we will see these parts would be metaphors of the relationship between the soldiers and feudal lords, using the image of vines and trees ensnarled together. The phrase “施于OO” is a kind of formulaic expressions which means a vine led to somewhere. It is repeated in Shijing several times and it is a motif presenting affection between parents and offspring, siblings, spouses, and sovereign and subjects. The word “兎?” is a recurring rhymes of the 魚 Yu group, and it is a linked word which means a vine called “女蘿”. The first half of the first stanza is a scene of gathering flourishing vines, and it is a kind of motifs used for the metaphor of affection frequently in Shijing.
