This course titled “Human-Centered Design Course for Design Core: Human-Centered Design and Service Design Projects” has been developed and offered to design students at Oregon State University to provide students an opportunity to learn and work with other students in the School of Design including Graphic Design, Apparel Design, Interior Design, and Merchandising Management. The focus was to learn critical concepts in human-centered design and apply the concepts to everyday designs around them. Another focus was to learn about service design thinking and practice the design method through the campus library service design project. The library staff participated in the project development and gave constructive feedback to students which benefitted to improve the project plan and outcomes. Based on feedback and the instructor’s own evaluation of the project, course design implications for future project development and course improvements have been drawn that the formal mid-checks need to be planned so student groups understand the level of details and extensiveness. Some group projects produced service design implementation plans that were not pushed through with details and remained at a surficial level.
미국 연속보호 은퇴주거단지(CCRC)의 배치 및 단위주거 특성

In Korea, there is a need for safe and convenient elderly housing so that older people can enjoy a good quality of life and perform various daily activities while they maintain their health and well-being. Thus, this study is to suggest community -based housing settings for the elderly. We analyzed living space characteristics of the Continuing Care Retirement Communty(CCRC) in the U.S. In particular, we focused on CCRCs in the Oregon area and examined two types of settings: 1) a tower setting and 2) a town setting. The CCRC living arrangements include independent living, assisted living, nursing care, and memory care. We visited six CCRCs in Oregon during January through May in 2015. The field observations and floor plan surveys were conducted for data collection. The data analysis revealed that there are two types of arrangements: the suburban type and the urban type. Element analysis of the living unit designs for each CCRC type demonstrated typical space configurations. It was found that home care services were provided from local communities. It is suggested that community-based housing for the elderly should include mixed housing types so that community facilities can be shared. Medical services in the community were offered through healthcare institutions, disease prevention centers, welfare centers, and sports facilities. In order to apply these community-based care systems to elderly Korean housing, it is important to develop a community based on independent homes that share services and welfare facilities.

Due to the low birth and aging society, we encountered many social problems and need special social care based on community welfare program. So, This case study is analyzed the day care center for senior, Harry and Jeanette Weinberg with Intergenerational Program at Washington, DC. The center developed and offered to child and Senior to provide effective intergenerational care. At first, we found out current situation of the senior day care services in Korea based on other precedence studies. And for this case study, we analyzed the center’s introduction, operation system, special strategies for intergenerational program. Also, we found out the space constitution and design specification for effective program. Through this study, The center has special care program for intergenerational with concept of interactive, intimacy, personalized, and easy to perform. and for spacial design, the center has great room, activity room next to kitchen with dining, relaxation room for healing, and U-shaped corridor for easily moving and wandering of dementia symptom. So, for constantly and effectively care service, we need to develop for the program and education for professional, and build the managing system for personalized care services with cooperative team among social worker, health and activity director.
창의적인 설계능력 향상을 위한 프로젝트 기반 스튜디오 교육 연구

Recent society demand have been changed about requiring talented person who is a creative human resource having problem solving ability instead of educational background. So, the importance of competency based learning come to the fore in the interior design education. Also, the educational purpose should develop the power of practical Professional ability. Generally, The Architectural Design Process consists of the Pre-design, Schematic design, Drawing development, Working drawing, and Construction supervision. The Design Studio Course is performed most of those process from Pre-design to Drawing development based on the design project like a professional’s. So, the design studio course is significant and comprehensive, because student could experience whole process of the professional design. Also, the course is linked other course such as fundamental design courses for expression, digital courses for presentation and drawing courses for design plans for their design project. For that reason, most studio classes are trained with 3 fundamental ways, Problem based learning, community of practice, and Project approach method. The Teaching Method which developed by this study is very helpful improving personal design competency. Also the most effective things lead student’s creative work, motivate them for self-directed work, and promote their practical design ability.
