The metallic bipolar plates of the molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) are composed of shielded slot plates and a center plate. The shielded slot plate supports the center-plate and the membrane electrode assembly. In order to increase the contact area between shielded slot plates and the membrane electrode assembly, compressive forces are applied to the shielded slot plate. For these reasons, it is necessary to predict the mechanical behavior of the shielded slot plate. Because the shielded slot plates are manufactured from the three-stage forming process, the mechanical behavior of the shielded slot plate is largely affected by the forming process. In order to predict the mechanical behavior of the shielded slot plate precisely, the forming process of the shielded slot plate should be considered. In this study, simulation results of the forming process were employed to the simulation of the mechanical behavior of the shielded slot plate to consider the forming effect. The proposed simulation model considering the forming effect shows good agreements with the experimental results.

The unit cell of the molten carbonate fuel cell(MCFC) is composed of metallic bipolar plate, anode, cathode and matrix. Among these, the shielded slot plate (the current collector) supports the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) and the stack mechanically. Therefore the compression properties of the shielded slot plate are necessary to design the MCFC stack. In order to analyze the compression properties, experiments were conducted using the unit cell, the anode shielded slot plate(ACC) and the cathode shielded slot plate(CCC). For the properties of the MCFC stack, 4 layers of the metallic bipolar plate were used. The deformation of the MCFC stack depends on the deformation of the cathode shielded slot plate.

The shielded slop plates of the molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) have a sheared corrugated trapezoidal pattern. In the FEM simulation of the shielded slot plate, the user material subroutine VUMAT is employed for the implementation of the ductile fracture criterion in the commercial FEM software ABAQUS. The experimental results of the shearing process were compared with the FEM simulation results in order to determine the critical damage value. Using this ductile fracture criterion, the three dimensional forming process of the shielded slot plate was numerically simulated. The effects of the shearing process on the forming process of the shieded slot plates were examined through FEM simulation and experiments. After springback the sheets shwo the warping due to the residual stress of the forming process.

Metallic bipolar plates of the MCFC(Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell) are composed of one center plate and two shielded slot plates. The unit cell of the shielded slot plate is trapezoidal in shape. From the analytical analysis of the simplified model of the unit cell, the stiffness and strength of simple deformation are obtained. FEM simulations were conducted to verify the analytical result. The homogenized material model for a plastically compressible anisotropic core is employed to simulate the mechanical behavior of the unit cell. The coefficients of the orthotropic elasticity and the yield criterion are obtained from the FEM simulation of the unit cell. The comparisons of the mechanical behaviors are made between the unit cell and the homogenized model.
