김기림 시의 시각화 실험: 구체시와 북 디자인 기법을 활용하여

이 연구는 구체시와 북 디자인 기법을 활용하여 시의 심상 표현 시각화와 감각 결합을 통한 시 감상법 발견을 목적으로 한다. 구체시란 글의 문맥이나 의미, 논리를 무시하고 문자를 그림 그리듯 배열해 회화적 요소를 중점으로 한 시 형식을 의미한다. 이처럼 시의 구성 요소 중 한 가지 요소만을 전달하는 것에 집중한 구체시 형식은 글자를 그림의 수단으로 활용한 방식이며, 언어의 의미보다 시에서 전달하고자 하는 심상 표현에 중점을 두고 있다. 연구의 시작은 구체시와 더불어 기존에 시도가 흔치 않았던 기법과 수단을 접목했을 때, 시 속 이미지 표현과 심상 전달의 새로운 가능성에 대한 의문이었다. 먼저 시의 해석을 기반으로 글 의미를 파악하고 글에서 느껴지는 감정, 무게, 색상, 질감, 은유적 표현 등을 각기 다른 형태로 표현할 수 있는 기법을 모색해 보았다. 연구 최종 결과물은 지면에 글자를 인쇄하여 책으로 엮는 것을 전제로 하기 때문에 북 디자인 기법을 필요로 했다. 이 두 가지 수단을 이용해 물리적으로 책을 변형하여 구체시 형식을 강화하고, 심상 표현을 위한 시각과 촉각의 결합을 시도했다. 위 실험은 국내 시 문학계에서 새로운 시도와 표현으로 접근했던 시인 김기림의 시집 『바다와 나비』를 선정해 진행되었다. 김기림은 1930년대 구인회에서 활동하던 시인이다. 국내 문학계에 모더니즘 이론을 본격적으로 도입하여 작품 활동을 펼쳤던 비평가이자 시인으로, 그를 선정한 이유는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 김기림은 과거 서정시와 달리 회화성을 중시하는 모더니즘 이론을 전파하며, 창작을 통해 이미지 표현을 분명히 한 점이다. 둘째, 김기림의 대표작 「바다와 나비」는 1930년대 기존 시에 비해 시각적 표현과 이미지가 선명하게 드러난 작품으로 평가받았다. 셋째, 김기림은 영국 모더니즘 시인, 평론가로 알려진 엘리엇의 영향을 받아 이미지와 이미지를 결합한 감각적 표현에 주력했다는 점이다. 이는 앞서 언급한 구체시 형식 강화와 시의 심상 표현 전달에 중점을 둔 시각화 실험에 부합하는 요소이다. 국내에서 구체시에 관한 연구와 실험은 많은 편이 아니지만, 다양한 시도가 조금씩 보이고 있다. 그러나 시를 시각화하는 것에 대해 기준이 명확하게 주어진 작품은 찾기 쉽지 않다. 이 연구는 문학의 시각화와 감상법을 다양한 형태로 제안하는 것에서 그 의미를 찾을 수 있다. The purpose of this paper lies in discovering ways of appreciating poetry through visualization of poetic imagery and combining different senses using concrete poetry and book design. Concrete poetry is a type of poetry that emphasizes the visual elements of the poem by arranging the words and letters to create certain shapes or form while ignoring the context, meaning, and logic of the text. This form of poetry, which focuses on delivering one specific element out of the various ones that compose poetry, uses letters as a means to create shapes, and it concentrates more on delivering the imagery of the poem rather than conveying the linguistic meaning. This study starts with an interrogation towards the potential of pioneering a new way of expressing images of poetry and delivering poetic imagery when unconventional techniques and methods are grafted onto concrete poetry. Based on various interpretations of the poems, this study explored ways to represent the feelings, gravity, colors, texture, and metaphors found in the poems in different shapes and forms. As the prerequisite of the study was to make books with the printed results of the study, it was crucial to apply techniques of book design. By materializing the results using these two means, the structure of concrete poetry is emphasized and a combination of visual and tactile elements for poetic imagery is attempted. For this experiment, the collection of poems titled 「The Sea and the Butterfly」 by Kim Kirim—a poet who approached Korean literature from a new and fresh perspective—was selected. Kim was a poet who was also a member of the Circle of Nine (Guinhoe) in the 1930s. Kim, a critic and a poet who was one of the first to employ modern theories in Korean literature, was selected in this experiment for the following reasons. First, Kim propagated Modernism which valued pictorialization, unlike lyric poetry. Second, Kim Kirim’s famous work 「The Sea and the Butterfly」 was received as a piece that provided visual expressions and imagery much more vividly than those of the 1930s. Third, Kim was influenced by the British poet and critic T.S. Eliot and was devoted to sensory expressions that combined images. This corresponds to the visualization experiment that focuses on emphasizing the form of concrete poetry and delivering poetic imagery. There may not be many studies or experiments on concrete poetry in Korea, but there seems to be various attempts starting to be made. However, finding work with clear standards for visualizing the poetry is not easy. This study has meaning in suggesting the visualization of literature and its way of appreciation in diverse forms.
