The origin, progress of development, characteristics, difficulties or problems in utilization of cytoplasmic male sterility of chinese cabbage were reviewed. Suggestion for solving the defficulties or Problems arising from the S-gene activity and inbreeding in the course of recurrent back cross for developing and maintenance of CMS lines were discussed.

Estimates of various components of genetic variance and heritability were obtained using North Carolina Design I for total plant weight, head weight and days to maturity on two Chinese cabbage populations, 189C₁ and 129C₁, that had each undergone one cycle of recurrent selection. Correlations between mean of selfed progenies (S₁) and half-sibs were also investigated. Average degrees of dominance for head weight and days to maturity were in the range of no or partial dominance in population 129C₁ while they were within complete or over-dominance range in 189C₁. Average degree of dominance for total weight showed the opposite trend to the two above-mentioned characters in both populations. Although the genetic systems are implied to be in. the additive range, estimates of heritability were lower in 129C₁ compared to 189C₁ for both total weight and head weight. These were attributed to the greater environmental susceptibility of the former population. Correlations between mean performance of S₁ and half-sibs were highly significant for all three characters in population 129C₁ but not for any one character in population 189C₁. The implications of the above results in future improvement programs involving these populations were also discussed.
An In vitro pollination technique for detecting self-incompatibility in cruciferous crops

An in vitro pollination procedure was developed as an efficient technique for assaying self-incompatibility of Cruciferous crops. Excised flowers were pollinated in the lab, kept in constant relative humidity chambers at 25℃, and the pollen tubes in the style were counted using fluorescence microscopy after staining with aniline blue the next day. A relative humidity (RH) of 98% was optimum for differentiating self-incompatibility vs. self-compatibility with excellent reproducibility. The number of pollen tubes penetrating to stigma under 98% RH was different from plant to plant and age to age of the flower. However. this variation for flowers of the same plant was highly correlated with seed set. Strongly self-incompatible plants could be selected by selecting for the minimum number of pollen tubes across a wide range of flower age for individual plants. This technique seemed to be widely applicable in the study of self-incompatibility.

Employing a set of six parent diallel crosses, the heterosis and inheritance mode of days to bolting and flowering were studied in Chinese cabbage. Mean heterosis was significant in days to bolting but not in days to flowering. High heritability was observed in both characters. A common major gene was postulated to explain the inheritance of over the lateness.
