N/A Microstructures and fracture toughness of the weld heat-affected zone of the ductile cast iron have been investigated. With increasing the cooling time from 800℃ to 500℃, the matrix structure of the heat-affected zone was transformed to martensite, martensitet pearlite, pearlite and pearlite including small amount of ferrite. The use of a proper preheat temperatures prevented the formation of martensite. These welding conditions corresponded to the preheat temperature of 200℃, heat input of 30KJ/㎝. And the instrumented charpy impact test has been carried out on a welded ductile cast iron. Result showed that the dynamic fracture toughness, K_(Id) was increased slightly with preheat temperature and heat input. In this work, it was shown that apparent impact energy includes contributions other than that of the true deflection of specimen. We found that a compliance energy correction was always needed to determine the true specimen energy. For this purpose, elastic compliance value of testing machine was measured dynamically by the low blow test to correct the apparent impact energy. From these results, the true specimen energy was nearly 62 percent of an apparent impact energy value. There, in instrumented impact testing, machine compliance corrections must be adapted to load-deflection curve.

N/A For enhancing the mechanical properties of LTE (low thermal expansion) cast steel, systematic researches have been carried out. The effects of alloying elements such as vanadium, molybdenum and carbon on the hardness and linear thermal expansion coefficient were investigated. In the range of 0.5∼2.3 wt% carbon, addition of 1.73 wt% carbon caused hardness increase due to the formation of eutectic carbide having high hardness but over the range of 1.73 wt% carbon, hardness was decreased. Thermal expansion coefficient increases with carbon contents. In the LTE cast steel containing 0.6 wt% carbon, hardness increased up to 1.96 wt% vanadium addition. But over the range of 1.96 wt% vanadium hardness was decreased by coarse eutectic carbide. Thermal expansion coefficient of LTE cast steel containing 0.6 wt%carbon moderately increased with increasing vanadium contents. There was no significant variation of hardness and thermal expansion coefficient according to molybdenum content in LTE cast steel. (Received June 29, 1998)

N/A In the view point of the environmental conservation and the energy reduction, the recycling of metal scrap is coming as one of the global subjects in the world. In this study, the movement of intermetallics with electromagnetic force in a melt of a scrap of AI-Si-Cu alloy (JIS ADC12), which was widely used in diecasting process, was investigated in order to eliminate the Fe element, which was usually accumulated in a scrap. In this study, we applied electromagnetic method to eliminate Fe element in ADC12 aluminum alloy scrap which contains 1.64wt.% Fe and the effects of electromagnetic force on the particle movement was visualized and confirmed by water modeling and experiment. As a result, the Fe intermetallic compounds are moved to the direction opposite to that of the electromagnetic force as the force applies, thus eliminated from the bulk metal. Therefore, the content of Fe in matrix decreased from 1.64wt.% to 0.45wt.%. (Received February 20, 1998)

N/A In order to increase the wettability between ceramic fiber and metal matrix, ceramic fibers are generally coated with metal. In this paper, we examined how the nickel layers coated on continuous graphite fiber to increase the wettability are affected with variation applied pressure. In order to examine the behavior of nickel layer with variation of applied pressure, microstructure and nickel mapping of composites were investigated with SEM, and tensile properties of the composite were tested with UTM. As the applied pressure increases, nickel layers were resolved into the aluminum matrix and ultimate tensile strength of the composite decreased. (Received October 22, 1998)

N/A In this study, Na, Li, Sb, Sr were added as the modifiers to improve the mechanical proper ties of Al-Si alloys and their effects were compared one another Thermal analysis was carried out to measure the degree of undercooling, that is, the basic mechanism of modifying effect. The measurements of holding time and analyses of components of Al-Si alloys were carried out to compare the fading of the modifiers. Greater degree of undercooling was measured from the modified alloy than the normal alloys. In the modified alloy, the shape of Si was changed into a fine fiber phase or a lamellar phase from the coarse plate phase. There are not modifying effect of Sb below the 1.5℃/sec of cooling rate. As the cooling rate increases, similar effects appears in the non-modified alloys like the modified alloys. Na and Li were faded in short time and were difficult to control on the melt, but Sb and Sr were scarcely faded for 6 hours of holding and were easy to control on the melt. Na and Sr are the good modifiers in terms of microstructure. Sb is the best modifier, but Na, Li are the inadequate modifiers in terms of fading.

In this report, we describe mold materials that were used to produce movable metal type by the investment casting method during the Joseon dynasty period in Korea. Samples were obtained from the Wibuinja collection, which is held by the National Museum of Korea. Most of the mold material remnants were found in the depressed areas of the movable type specimens, and we therefore performed non-destructive analyses including XRF, EDS, and XRD. Through these analyses, we were able to identify the mold remnants as hydrocerussite [trilead dihydroxide dicarbonate, Pb3(CO3)2(OH)2] formed in platy hexagonal crystallites. Hydrocerussite was first used to make white pigments and cosmetics in ancient Greece, but this is the first report of hydrocerussite used as mold material applied around a disposable pattern for investment casting. The results of this study will further the understanding of the production process for early movable metal type and ancient casting technologies.
