This study aims to compare and analyze the construct-response items between ordinary high schools and specific purpose high schools. The comparative analysis of construct-response items was done respectively in three ordinary high schools and specific purpose high schools in Incheon in 2013. The results of item analysis are as follows: Comparing with the results of previous similar studies, restricted-response essayitems requiring students`` high-level thought were more tested. In terms of language of instruction, a much higher proportion of English language use was shown in specific purpose high schools. And it was hard to find non-language form items in both. Generally, items for checking students’vocabulary & grammar ability and reading skills accounted for more percentages. However, these types items were inclined to be combined with inference questions in specific purpose high schools. The items to improve fluency, flexibility, elaboration and originality were set fairly in all schools. Therefore, non-language types of items and more restricted-response essay items could be the answer to improving students`` authentic reading and writing ability and high-level thought not in regular tests but through performance tests with more use of English instruction in class activities.
