The settling of the dredged soil may vary with mineral composition, grain size distribution, initial water content and salt concentration of suspension of the site. A series of settling column test was performed to investigate the behaviour of solid suspension material from dredging and reclamation. Settling mode was divided into four types from the observation of interface and settling curves of clay minerals and marine clay samples, and the relationship charts of salt concentration and the initial water content were established to use in the dredging operation with any salt concentration. The critical initial water content which was defined as a threshold of zone settling and the consolidation settling was varied with salt concentration of water and was proportional to the plasticity of soil in sea water.

A series of settling column test was performed to investigate the settling rate characteristics of solid suspension material from dredging and reclamation. The settling rate of soil mixed with various size of particles depended on clay fraction which showed a inherent flux. A model was developed to predict the particle flux of mixed soil from the clay flux and its applicability was verified.

134 Dutch cone (mechanical cone) and 9 piezocone (electronic cone) penetration tests have been performed in the southwestern part of Korea. In general, Dutch cone results may be different from that of piezocone due to the difference in structure of the cones. 6 Dutch cone and piezocone test data which were obtained at the same point respectively, were analyzed and plotted in soil classification chart proposed by Robertson et. al.(1986, 1990). Cone factors of Dutch cone and piezocone test empirically have been determined using laboratory and field vane test results. Using this cone factors, it was shown that there was good correlation between shear strength estimated using cone resistance and that of laboratory test and field vane tests. It was found that there was a good correlation between cone resistance from Dutch cone and that from piezocone. Relationship formula was also suggested. Dutch cone test provides a useful means for stratigraphic profiling in large project and has some advantage over piezocone in particular situations, such as very soft clay ground and dredged area.

The research effort has been focused on better calculation methods for the coefficient of consolidation under the theory of one dimensional consolidation. This research has been made available to engineers in the form of the computer program COMCv. The following conclusions can be drawn from the result of the engineering analysis, programming, and field observations. 1. Performing comparative study on six mehods(Taylor, Casagrande, Sivaram & Swamee,Su, Cour, and Scott) which can find out the coefficient of consolidation, the computer program COMCv is developed for each method. 2. Comparing the observed settlement and computed one in use of the coefficient of consolidation computed with COMCv, the result by the method of Sivaram & Swamee, Taylor, and Su is closer to the observed settlement
