Korean angelica(Angelica gigas Nakai), a oriental medicinal plants is important and in great demand in Korea. This crop is a biennial which is to die after flower, so as could not harvest the root. A new variety Anpung was developed from the selection of the local collecting population by medicinal crop team at NCES in 2001. This showed stable bolting during its cropping year and have high quality and yield potential. The color is greenish purple in stem and red purple in flower. It was longer in plant height and root length, thicker in root diameter, more leave and latheral roots comparing with the check variety manchu. The dry root was 72 g/plant showing heavier than check variety of 65 g/plant. It showed such low bolting rate s 0.5%, on the other hand 49.3% in landrace when it cultured by transplanting with heating nursery seedlings, and 0∼15% with field nursery seedlings. The dry root yield of the variety was averaged 3,630 ㎏/㏊ out yielding the check variety by 11% at the three regional yield test from 1999 to 2001. Finally, “Anpung” showed higher content of extracts up to 46.3% in “Anpung”and 45% in check variety, decursin and decursinol contents was 3.48% and 2.79%, showing slightly than check variety.

To establish appropriate seed production system in Angelica gigas. Germination of seeds with different bolting years and the growth characters of plants originated from these seeds were investigated. Seed weight from 1st year bolting plant was highest. In germinability according to seeds with different bolting years, seeds from 1st year bolting plant were higher than seeds from 2nd. 3rd years bolting one. In growth characters of plants originated from seeds with different bolting years, as the bolting years became late, root growth increased and top growth decreased, therefore T/R ratio decreased.
참당귀묘의 (當歸苗) 생육진전 (生育進展) 양상 및 파종량에 따른 묘생육 특성

These experiment were conducted to know the seedling growth pattern and to determine the appropriate seeding amount for producing the small and middle sized uniform seedlings of which known to have low bolting in the cultivation of Angelica gigas. Cotyledons of seedling were emerged by 18 days after seeding and the first and the second leaf appeared at 5.0 days and 9.8 days respectively after the anterior leaf emergence. Leaf development from the 3rd to the 6th in order needs about 13 days respectively after the emergence of anterior leaf. Growth of small and middle sized seedling of which required 60∼87days were 3.0 to 7.0㎜ in root head diameter, 63 to 10.3㎝ in root length, 0.4 to 1.3g in fresh root weight per plant with 3.9 to 5.0 leaves. The highest production ratio of small and middle sized seedlings was showers in 15,000seeds/㎡ of seeding amount as 52.8% respectively.

Theses studies were conducted to clarify the germinating characteristics of seed treated with different temperature, light, and Gibberellin(GA₃) to produce the homogeneous seedlings Angelicagigas NAKAI. The results obtained are summarized as follows : Rate and speed of germinating at 25℃ were higher than 15℃ and 20℃ by 87.3% and 68.9% and also the required day for germination at 25℃ was shortest by 14.1 days. Germination rate at the light condition was 90.7% and that at the dark was 65.7%. Germinating ability of seed stored at 4℃ and -10℃ for 165 days as dried states was 92.0% and 91.3% while that at room temperature was 50.3%, but the longer storage of seed than 165 days decreased the ability. Gibberellin treatment by 10ppm to seed stored at 4℃ and by 6ppm to seed stored at -10℃ increased the germination rate more by 20.9% and 31.7% than nontreated seed.
