It necessarily follows that wear particles are generated through a friction and wear in a mechanical moving system. The wear particles are relative to the failure and the life of machine elements directly. To analyze the wear particle, its shape characteristics were calculated quantitative values such as diameter, roundness and fractal parameters by digital image processing. In this study, the histograms of shape parameters of wear particles were used for the purpose of analyzing the distribution of wear particles in various conditions. We consider that the histogram of shape parameter can be effectively represented to study a wear mechanism.

The surface modification of automobile parts is of great technologicalimportance for the improvement of corrosion resistance, wear resistance, fatigue strength and so on. Recently, research on the development of the technology of surface modification substituting 6-balance chrome process has progressively been achieved in automobile parts. Although the innovation technology for the improve- ment of the corrosion-resisting and wear resistant properties through post oxidation after nitrocarburising process had attracted a great attention. For this, anodically potentiodynamic polarisation testing was carried out to corrosion resistance and friction and wear experiment according to applied load and sliding distance was carried out to evaluate the wear resistance of machine structural steel with nitrocarburising and non-nitrocarburising SM45C. The presumed wear volume was calculated with the image processing for evaluation of wear resistance of two materials. The results show that the nitrocarburising had a distinguished corrosion resistance and wear resistance than non-nitrocarburising.

Recently the high speed end-milling processing is demanded the high-precise technique with good surface roughness and rapid time in aircraft, automobile part and molding industry. The working factors of high speed end-milling has an effect on surface roughness of cutting surface. Therefore this study was carried out to analyze the working factors to get the optimum surface roughness by design of experiment. From this study, surface roughness have an much effect according to priority on Spindle speed, feed rate, hardness and axial depth of cut. By design of experiment, it is effectively represented shape characteristics of surface roughness in high speed end-milling. And determination(R²) coefficient of regression equation had a satisfactory reliability of 89.7% and regression equation of surface roughness is made by regression analysis.
