The effect of blow-by gas ventilation system on the degradation of engine oil was investigated through the analysis of engine oil. Two different blow-by gas ventilation systems, which are an orifice type and a valve type, were tested on the urban road. The blow-by gas flow rate was characterized in the engine bench test. The degradation of the oil sample was analyzed in terms of viscosity, total acid number (T AN) and trace metal. It was found that the orifice type had a more significant effect on the degradation of the oil than the valve type. As test length of the vehicles increased, the effect of temperature on viscosity was bigger for the orifice type. The orifice type had higher TAN value and more trace metal. This degradation of the oil could form sludge within a cylinder head and a crankcase. Oil drain period suggested by the used oil analysis was within the drive distance of 6000km in the urban driving condition.

The emission characteristics were compared by two different emission test cycles for heavy-duty diesel engines. One is ECE R-49 test cycle and the other is ESC. In order to investigate the performance of both test cycles, a heavy-duty diesel engine for a city bus was used with and without after-treatment device. Smoke opacity was also measured to observe the instantaneous smoke value for both test cycles. It was found that more gas emissions produced in ECE R-49 test cycle while more PM created in ESC test cycle without DPF. Smoke opacity was proportional to the engine power and had higher values in the ESC test cycle.

Greenhouse gas is the big issue of the whole world. So foreign countries, EU, USA, Japan, China and Korea made the policy for reducing greenhouse gas. For calculation of reduction, it is necessary to know the quantity of current greenhouse emission per year in Korea. It is not reflected real driving condition for measuring the Fuel economy and greenhouse gas. The subject of this study is to figure out the characteristics which influence on greenhouse gas in real driving condition. And final goal is applying the policy greenhouse emission reduction.

The characteristics of soot oxidation are investigated experimentally. Soot oxidation occurs at approximately 470t in a mixture 21%O₂. base N₂ gas. and enhances as temperature increases. The initiation temperature of soot oxidation advances greatly to about 330°C with the addition of 300ppm NO₂ CO is generated at higher temperature by about 100°C than CO₂ in the process of soot oxidation. As the O₂ concentration increases, the soot oxidation started at low temperature and CO₂ is created a lot. With the result of the soot oxidation by NO₂, NO and 0₂, NO₂ is the most effective and NO and 0₂, followed.

The discharge started at lower voltage for the cathode corona than the anode corona. In contract Spark occurred higher voltage for the cathode corona. The anode corona showed higher NO to NO₂ conversion rate. The cone-hole type showed more stable discharge than the cone-plate type. As O₂ concentration increases, the NO to NO₂ conversion increases. It can be seen that the onset of combustion occurs at approximately 280℃ when using NO₂, while temperatures of around 480℃ are required to combust soot using 0₂

In order to analyze fuel consumption characteristics of passenger cars, an experiment study was carried out under various driving conditions; vehicle speed. air conditioner on/off, stop idle, fast and slow acceleration. The measurements were made with various sedan cars which were light, small and mid-size cars. These cars were tested on-road with fuel consumption meter. The instantaneous fuel consumption and driving speed were calculated with signals from the ECU.<br/>
