1873년 일본사절단이 바라 본 근대 도시 상트페테르부르크의 ‘아우라’와 전근대적 과거의 유산

본 논문의 목적은 제정 시기 러시아에서 상트페테르부르크가 가지고 있는 근대 유럽도시로서의 특성을 19세기 중반에 이곳을 방문한 일본 사절단이 남긴 기록을 통해 살펴보는 것이다. 즉, 유럽화의 중심지인 수도 상트페테르부르크와 여전히 전근대적인 유산이 강하게 영향력을 행사하고 있었던 제국의 나머지 지역들을 이와쿠라 사절단이라는 외국 사절단의 경험을 통해 재구성해 보는 것이다. 벤야민의 ‘아우라’ 개념과 연관 지어 살펴볼 때 상트페테르부르크는 표트르 1세와 그가 추진한 유럽화라는 후광으로 둘러싸인 곳이었다. 즉, 이 도시는 러시아 근대화를 대표하는 지역이자, 거의 유일하게 유럽화된 지역이었다. 표트르 1세 이래로 역대 러시아 황제들에 의해 근대 도시로 꾸며진 상트페테르부르크의 여러 유럽 문물들은 제국의 다른 지역으로 확산되지 못하였으며, 그 결과 전근대적 전통과 유산 속에서 삶을 영위하고 있던 다수 인민들에게 있어 이 도시는 유럽적 문물로 아름답게 꾸며진, 그러나 자신들이 함부로 접근할 수 없는 아우라의 도시였다. 이 시기 이 도시를 방문했던 이와쿠라 사절단은 러시아 제국의 이러한 현실을 충분히 경험했다. 그리고 이에 근거해서 일본 사절단은 러시아의 근대화 수준이 당시 일본이 따라갈 수 없을 정도로 대단히 높은 것은 아니라고 판단하였으며, 따라서 당시 일본에 퍼져있던 러시아에 대한 두려움은 실제보다 과장된 것이라고 주장했다. The aim of this article is to compare and analyze the modernity of St. Petersburg and the realities of premodern Russian Empire which was experienced by Iwakura Embassy(Mission) visited Russia in the mid-19th century. The St. Petersburg was a symbol of Europeanization and modernization of Imperial Russia. In other words, St. Petersburg was a region that was representative of the level of modernization in Russia, and was the only area in the modernization of the Russian Empire. But St. Petersburg was not a birthplace for the modernization of the Russian Empire. The reason is that modern culture which had developed in St. Petersburg did not spread to other parts of the Russian Empire. In this sense, the St. Petersburg was a open space only to the russian ruling class, but was a closed space which was surrounded by ‘Aura’ for peasants who had occupied the majority of the population. Japanese delegation was well aware of these realities of the Russian Empire. They pointed out the fact that in the 19th century Japanese people thought that Russia was a very modernized country, and were afraid of. But according to the view of Japanese delegation, this was a inflated image than real. And on this basis, they were determined that Japan could overtake the Russian Empire.
