The friction and wear of plasma sprayed chromium oxide coating were investigated at room temperature and 450℃ under dry, reciprocating contact condition. Measurements of friction and wear rate were made in association with sliding distance for two pairs:self-mated contact between chromium oxide sprayed specimens and uncoated cast iron plate against chromium-plated disc which represents the contact between cylinder liner and piston ring in diesel engines. Test result shows that chromium oxide coating has better wear resistance and lower wear rate than the currently used cast iron cylinder liner and piston ring. Smooth wear protective layers were formed on the worn surface of self-mated coated pair. These layers contributed to decreasing the wear rate of chromium oxide coating. In order to identify wear mechanism of the worn surface, SEM(Scanning Electron Microscopy) and EDS (Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis) were used.
