색채표현을 통한 판타지의 재현에 관한 연구 : 팀 버튼의 영화 <이상한 나라의 엘리스>를 중심으로

어떠한 대상을 바라본다는 것은 인간의 시각기관이 빛에 대하여 생리적 자극을 받는 과정이며 대상의 의미를 파악하는 과정이다. 따라서 시각적 행위는 생리적 행위임과 동시에 관습적이고 사회적인 행위라 할 수 있다. 우리는 이러한 사회화된 시각행위를 ‘재현’이라고 표현한다. 재현은 필수적으로 ‘재현체계’를 필요로 하게 되는데, 영화와 같은 시각적 재현물에 있어 색은 재현체계의 중요한 부분으로 자리 잡고 있다. 본 논문은 영화의 색이 단순한 색상, 명도, 채도의 조합을 뛰어넘어 특별한 연상을 통해 영화의 의미를 드러내는 시각적 재현체계라는 관점을 가지고 있다. 이를 입증하기 위해 본 연구는 판타지 영화에 주목하였다. 문학 작품 속 서사로 존재했던 판타지는 미디어의 발달과 함께 시각매체 속에 자리 잡으면서 색채의 사용이 의미를 발생시키기는 장치로 기능하기 때문이다. 본 연구의 목적은 판타지 영화의 색채표현이 일정한 상징을 가지고 있으며 그것이 의미를 드러내는 과정임을 밝히는 것이다. 연구의 대상으로는 팀 버튼 감독의 영화 〈이상한 나라의 엘리스〉(2010)를 선택하였다. 팀 버튼 감독은 판타지의 재현이라는 그의 영화 전체를 관통하는 공통분모를 가지고 있다는 점과 현실과 판타지의 구분이 명확하다는 점, 대중에 대한 소구력이 높다는 점을 고려하였다. 연구방법은 내러티브의 전개에 따라 영화의 디지털 이미지를 캡처한 후 육안측색을 통해 이루어졌으며, 색채의 심리적인 면을 다루는 인식적 차이에 의한 분류로서 색명을 사용하였다. 이러한 과정을 거쳐 판타지 영화의 색채표현은 현실과 환상을 구분하는 이정표로 기능하고 있으며, 캐릭터와 공간의 성격을 규정하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 색채의 사용이 단순히 서사구조를 지탱하는 보조적 장치가 아니라 극의 전개를 암시하거나, 이항대립을 통해 의미를 발생시키는 중요한 표현의 수단임을 알 수 있었다. To see a certain object is a process of human visual organ's acceptance of a physiological stimulus of light and its grasp of the meaning of the object. In this sense, the visual act can be a physiological act and at the same time habitual and social act. This socialized visual act can be named as “representation”. Representation needs a system of representation indispensably. Colors take up important parts in system of representation with regard to visual works of representation such as films. This paper has a viewpoint that colors of films are a system of representation to expose meaning of films through special association beyond the simple combination of hue, brightness and saturation. Fantasy films are paid attention to prove the viewpoint in that using colors functions as the equipment of generating meanings as epic fantasy in literary works holds on visual media with the development of media. The object of this study is to prove that color expression of fantasy films has constant symbols and it is the process of revealing the meanings of them. The film, “Alice in Wonderland” by Tim Burton is chosen for this study due to his works' common denominator of fantasy representation spanned all of his films, obvious differentiation between reality and fantasy, and highly appealing power to the public. As for research methods, capturing digital images of the film is followed by color measurement using the naked eye according to the narrative development, and color names are used for classification of cognitive differences dealing with psychological aspect of colors. Through this process, this study shows that color expression of fantasy films functions as a milestone of dividing reality and fantasy, and prescribes features of characteristics and spaces. It also shows that using colors is not just auxiliary devices to support narrative structure, but important means of expression to suggest the evolution of drama or to generate meaning through the binary opposition.
