백제는 중국과 고구려의 선진문화를 적극적으로 받아들여 세련되고 우아한 미술문화를 꽃피웠다. 또한, 이를 신라와 일본에 전해줌으로써 적극적인 문화발전 양상의 형태를 띄며, 삼국 미술문화에 있어서 중심적인 역할을 하였다. 백제인의 삶은 패망의 역사 속에 잊혀졌지만 유려하고, 온화하며 섬세한 미술작품을 남긴 것으로 보아 백제인의 수준 높은 미의식을 알 수 있다. 기존의 미술사적인 접근이나 고고학적인 접근은 이러한 백제 미술의 정신사적인 토대를 중심으로 연구되어지지 못한 채 단순한 ``소박함``과 ``고졸미`` 등으로만 표현되어지는 아쉬움이 있다. 백제는 고유 신앙적 기초 위에 철학적 기초를 미술에 반영하고 미의식을 표출하였으며, ``소박함``과 ``고졸미`` 등으로 표현되어지는 것 외에 더욱 다양하고 개방적이며 세련된 것이었다. 백제인의 인생관과 세계관을 볼 때, 백제미술의 미의식은 ``비장미``와 ``소박미``의 두 유형으로 집약된다. 백제미술은 부드럽고 온아한 미로 유약하기만 한 것이 아니라 절제와 지조를 내면에 응축시킨 美이므로 백제의 역사적 현실과 관련하여 ``비장미``라고 보여 진다. 부드러운 힘을 미술품에 표현할 줄 아는 백제인은 지나치지도 않고 모자라지도 않는 중용의 삶을 실천윤리로 가지고 살아가는 부드러운 힘을 가진 사람들이다. 소박하지만 나약하지 않은 아름다움을 표현할 줄 아는, 삶의 모든 것을 겸허하게 받아들이는 소박한 태도가 오히려 삶의 질곡에 압도되지 않고 강인한 생명력을 발휘할 수 있는 힘을 가지고 있었던 것이다. 이는 다시 한국적 특성을 가진 문화예술로, 온아하고 여유 있는 아름다움 속에 때론 순응하고 때론 강인하게 인내하는 저력으로 이어갈 수 있었던 것이다. Baekje established sophisticated and refined fine art by actively adopting the developed culture of China and Goguryeo. Baekje, also, played an important role in transmitting the developed art to Silla and Japan. Even though the nation has disappeared in history, through the graceful and delicate cultural remains we can guess Baekje people had such a high aesthetic sense. The earlier studies of Baekje art based on historical and archaeological approaches, however, just focused on the ``simplicity`` and ``antique refined beauty`` of artifacts without acknowledging spiritual foundation of Baekje people. Baekje art which reflects Baekje people`s unique religious faith and philosophy is much more than ``simplicity`` and ``antique refiend beauty``. Based on the Baekje people`s outlook on the world and life, the aesthetic consiousness of Baekje art can be classified into two types: ``heroic resolve`` and ``simplicity``. Baekje art is condensed not only with tenderness and gracefulness but also with fidelity and constancy. Beakje people who had ``soft power`` inside always maintained their moderate position avoiding going to extremes, and that principle was expressed into artworks. Simple but not weak world view of Baekje people made them accept everything of life, even the adversities. This attitude, eventually, helped them put their tenacious hold on life into art, sometimes adapting to nature and sometimes enduring the times.
