Proton exchange membrane fuel cell is regarded as a promising future energy resource for various industry applications among engineering researchers. However, due to the low-temperature operation of PEM fuel cell, water management is essential for the improvement of PEM fuel cell performance. This study reports on the basic experimental investigation of the water transport characteristics in a model gas diffusion layer (GDL) - channel structure for PEM fuel cells. To understand the water transport through the GDL, a customized sample rig was designed and fabricated. The water droplet behavior (emergence and growth) was observed using the sample rig with a transparent window module by using CCD camera. Through this research, the water droplet characteristics were visualized and analyzed with clamping pressure acting on the GDL and channel assembly. It is expected that this study can provide a fundamental data for achieving the proper water management inside PEM fuel cells.
