Inkjet technology has various merits as a direct patterning process in plenty of industrial applications, but critical issue such as coffee ring effect should be overcome for the application to an industrial manufacturing process. In this paper, we introduced the morphological analysis of inkjet printed pattrerns on the characristics of inks and substrates. In case of Triethlene Glycol Monoethly Ether based ink, the coffee ring effect was observed. However, an ethanol based ink showed the round shaped morphology under the same printing conditions and surface conditions. An ink consisted of the solvent with high boiling point results in coffee ring effect. This experimental results showed that the morphological change of the printed droplet is caused by the main solvent of ink, rather than the metal content, viscosity and surface tension.

In this study, characteristics of silver ink-jet printing were investigated under various substrate treatments such as substrate heating, hydrophobic coating, and ultraviolet(UV)/ozone soaking. Fluorocarbon(FC) film was spin-coated on the polyimide (PI) film substrate to obtain a hydrophobic surface. Although hydrophobicity of the FC film could reduce the diameter of the printed droplets, the singlet images printed on the FC film surface showed irregularities in the pattern size and the position of the printed droplet along with droplet merging phenomenon. The proposed UV/ozone soaking of the FC film improved the uniformity of the pattern size and the droplet position after printing and substrate heating was very effective way in preventing droplet merging. By heating of the substrate after UV/ozone soaking of the coated FC film, silver conductive lines of 78 - 116 ㎛ line were successfully printed at low substrate temperatures of 40℃.

Polymer thick film capacitors were successfully fabricated by using ink-jet printing and screen printing technology. First, a bottom electrode was patterned by ink-jet printing of a nano-sized silver ink. Next, a dielectric layer was formed by the screen printing, then a top electrode was pattern by ink-jet printing of a nano-sized silver ink. The printed area of the dielectric layers were changed into 2×2㎡ and 4×2㎡, and also the area of the electrodes were patterned with 1×3㎟ and 1×3㎟. The thickness of the printed dielectric layer was ranged from 1.1 to 1.4㎛. The analysis of capacitances verified that the capacitances was proportional to the area of the printed electrode. The capacitances of the fabricated capacitors resulted in one third of the calculated capacitances.

In this paper, we have studied the bulging phenomenon of ink-jet printed silver lines. The used silver inks are DGP-40LT-15C and DGH-55HTG of Advanced Nano Product (ANP) Company. We investigated the behavior of bulging by changing the polarity of the inks, the surface energy of substrate and droplet spacing in printing. The contact angle of the polar inks increased much more sensitively than the nonpolar ink as the surface energy of the substrate increases. In the case of the nonpolar ink, the bulging phenomenon occurred seriously as the droplet spacing decreased at the constant surface energy.
