The aim of this brief essay is to see how deftly Vladimir Nabokov, anan eminent emigre' writer, worked his logodaedalic and logomachic skills into his premier work Lolita. Admittedly, the work of delving into anything as personalized yet conventionalized a form as logodaedaly and logomachy involves a good bit of "which hunting" and a good measure of "alter egoing" as well. It is contended that Nabokov has succeeded in putting his paronomasiac skills to the best possible use in his e'migre' writing to enhance it to a level that may well approach, nay, even in some instances exceed that achieved by literary giants like Marcel Prous, William Shakespeare, and James Joyce. The range of paronomasia resorted to by Nabokov is perhaps far more extensive and deep-structured (in the non-Chomskyan sense) than the authors mentioned above. Some of the word-level punning is easy enough to grasp, needless to say, but there are acrostics and other logomachic devices that an ordinary soul like us can only hope to conjecture with no better chance of success than trying to weave a pattern with a spider's web.
