North Korean poetry has been discussed enough so far because of the ideological division on the Korean Peninsula. Lately, however, research and revaluation of the books on which the ban was lifted have been conducted at the level of continuity of the literature history as a national community. Considering the situational context, thus, I would like to describe literary history which includes the works excluded from discussion during the Cold War period. This paper examines some aspects of North Korean poetry, comparing the true and false side of proletarian literature of the 20's and 30's which has been addressed quite differently. As s result, it was observed that most of North Korean poetry had some specific purpose. They could be characterized as the "Juche"(self-reliance) literary theory allegedly created by the lake Kim Il-sung, literature as a study on hnmanity, literature serving the socialist revolution, and socialist realism literature. Poetry of North Korea mainly beautifies Kim's anti-Japanese struggles during the Japanese colonial rule over Korea, idolizes Kim Il-sung, pledges loyality, and admires the revolution or various national policies. Many of North Korea poem are and they were composed toward a special purpose official manifesto. Compared with the fact that South Korean poetry expresses the truth and pain appealing to the basic human mind, North Korean poetry is far differant from artistic essence. But we should note that the heterogeneity between the two comes from the fact that South Korean poetry was also innocence-oriented and sought for art for art's sake under the liberalism just as North Korean poetry emphasized the loyality to the Party, the working class, and the people's duty, etc. on the basis of socialism. To overcome this heterogeneity as well as recover homogeneity we need to open each other as a national community leaving behind the ideological friction. For example, we need to exchange mutually for reunification of our partitioned nation, to form national sympathy, and to introspect philosophically on the unflexible creation of North Korean poetry. In conclusion, we have to determine how to recover homogeneity of human beings, depending on whether we view the object of poetry as a phenomenon or as essence.
