조선 사대부들이 만들어 즐긴 원림은 대체로 산수간에 위치한다. 기존 자연이 빼어난 곳은 아름다운 정원으로 만들기도 쉽다. 조선 원림에서 좋은 산수를 갖춘 땅 읽기, 곧 상지(相地)가 중요시되는 까닭이 여기에 있다. 대체로 연고지나 이미 알고 있던 곳을 대상으로 하되, 수시로 찾아 거니는 ‘유(遊)’와 그 과정에서의 ‘격물치지(格物致知)’를 통해 자연미를 정치하게 읽어냈다. 상지라고 하면 정원을 조성할만한 땅을 찾아 정하고 다듬는 과정을 포함한다. 주변까지 넓게 포함하여 읽음으로써 내원만이 아닌 외원까지도 중요시했다. 면밀한 땅 읽기는 탁월한 원림 공간구 성과 경관연출로 이어졌을 뿐만 아니라 명명제영과 같은 자연과의 깊은 교감으로까지 이어졌다. 대표적 사대부 원림 무계정사, 소쇄원, 금쇄동/수정동/부용동, 백운동 등을 대상으로 땅 읽기를 살펴본 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 각원림은 한결같이 지형 및 그로 인한 미기후나 경관, 풍수상의 이점이 살아 있는 곳이다. 둘째, 일부 산정상부나 섬 등과 같은 곳을 제외하면 대체로 바위와 물을 갖춘 산계곡부가 많다. 셋째, 자연조건을 공학적, 생태적, 심미적으로 읽어 내어 공간과 시설을 조성하되 기존 자연경물은 최대한 활용하면서 인위는 최소화하였다. 넷째, 그렇게 읽어낸 자연물의 특질을 토대로 상징과 의미, 시적 은유로 가득한 이름을 짓고 즐겼다. 다섯째, 상지의 결과로서 원림 입지는 본가나 마을과의 거리에 따라 수시이용권, 일일이용권, 별도생활권으로 분류할 수가 있다. The gardens that Joseon scholars built and enjoyed are generally located in the foot or valley of mountains. It is easy to make a beautiful garden where existing nature is outstanding. This is why seeking and selecting the land with good landscape. The Sangji(相地) is such an important issue in the garden of Joseon. In general, the target area is a place to live or to know, but scholars read natural beauty elaborately and sophisticated through the pleasure of frequent visits and the ‘gaining knowledge by the close study of things(格物致知)’ in the process. The term ‘Sangji’ includes searching, selecting and refining land to create a garden. By reading surrounding area widely, not only the inner garden but also the exterior garden became important. The careful reading of land led to the composition of outstanding landscapes, and also led to a deeper sympathy with nature such as ‘giving names and make poems into singing(命名題詠)’. The results of land readings on principal scholar’s gardens, such as Mugye jeongsa, Sosaewon, Geumsoae-dong/Sujeong-dong/Buyong-dong and Baekwoon-dong can be summarized as follows. First, each garden is a place where the terrain, the microclimate, the landscape, and the feng shui benefits are alive. Second, there are mostly in the mountain valleys with rocks and water, except for some mountain tops and islands. Third, natural conditions were read out in engineering, ecological, and aesthetic ways to create unique space and facilities. In addition, existing natural materials are utilized to the utmost and artificiality is minimized. Fourth, based on the characteristics of natural objects read out, they enjoyed and pleasured the names filled with symbols, meanings, and poetic metaphors. Fifth, as a result of site selection, garden location can be divided into frequent use sphere, daily use sphere, and separate living sphere, according to the distance from home or village.
