Fast AoA Tracking in Millimeter Wave Lens MIMO for V21 Systems

This paper proposes and analyzes a fast angle of arrival (AoA) tracking algorithm in millimeter wave (mmWave) lens multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. The proposed algorithm suits for the vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications where the fast acquisition of the AoA of vehicles is crucial for the ultra reliability of its application. We introduce a unique AoA tracking algorihtm which significantly reduces the required tracking overhead by exploiting only the subset of antenna information. Sparse channel charcteristic in the mmWave lens MIMO architecture makes this possible. We add our theoretical analyses on the optimal selection of the subset and the Cramer Rao’s lower bound of the proposed method. Finally, we validate our analyses through realistic 3D simulations. Our numerical results shows that the proposed algorithm offers a promising V2I solution, a good AOA tracking performance with low latency.
