기혼여성의 일-가정 양립 경험의 맥락에서 추가출산의향과 부모효능감에 대한 질적연구

본 연구는 저출산 현상을 보다 통합적으로 이해하고자 기혼여성의 일-가정 양립 경험 속에 나타난 추가출산의향과 부모효능감의 지각경험과 의미를 탐구하였다. 이를 위해 수도권에 거주하며 자녀를 양육하는 기혼여성 8명을 눈덩이 표집하여 일-가정 양립의 경험과 추가출산의향에 관한 심층면접을 실시하였다. 본 연구의 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 기혼여성의 일-가정 양립 경험에서 드러난 의미진술들은 ‘자아실현과 엄마역할 사이의 분투’, ‘추가출산을 고려할 수 없는 자원의 제약’, ‘낮은 부모효능감 인식의 원인들’이라는 3개의 의미단위로 범주화되었다. 둘째, 이 의미진술 하위의 의미단위들을 분석한 결과 기존의 저출산 관련 연구와 차별되게 드러난 점은 ‘낮은 부모효능감’으로 나타났다. 셋째, 연구참여자가 낮은 부모효능감을 지각하는 원인들로는 ‘신체적 한계’, ‘양육기술의 부족’ 그리고 ‘팍팍하기만 한 제도적 조건들’로 나타났다. 이에 본 연구는 향후 저출산 대책이 인구정책의 관점이 아니라 여성의 입장에서 재해석되어야 하며, 부모역할 수행의 탈상품화를 증대할 수 있는 거시적 사회정책과 부모효능감의 증진을 도모할 수 있는 사회서비스의 제공을 제언하는 바이다. This study examines the context of reconciling work and family life to investigate married women’s intentions of having another child and perceived parental efficacy to understand the low birth rate in South Korea. The results showed that, first, married women’s experience of work and family life can be categorized in three ways: struggle between self-actualization and motherhood, limited resources that hinder the additional birth, and reasons for perceiving low parental efficacy. Second, a finding on low parental efficacy was distinctive from the existing literature on the issue of additional childbirth. Third, the low parental efficacy among the research participants was derived from physical limitations for reproduction, lack of parenting skills, and an insufficient welfare system. The results suggest the consideration of two areas regarding married women’s balance between work and family life in government policy planning that addresses low fertility: de-commodifying parenting tasks through the enhancement of social welfare policy, and support of individual parental empowerment to promote parental efficacy.

엄마대학원생의 학업 : 육아 양립 경험에 관한 현상학적 연구

본 연구가 주목한 엄마대학원생은 엄마와 대학원생의 역할을 동시에 수행하는 여성으로 그동안 학문적으로 알려진 바가 매우 제한적이었다. 이에 대해 연구는 엄마대학원생들의 학업 - 육아 양립의 경험을 심층적으로 탐구하고자 현상학적 연구를 수행하였다. 그 결과 엄마대학원생은 제한된 시간과 물리적 힘을 두고 대학원생의 역할과 엄마의 역할이 경합하는 역할갈등을 경험한다는 것을 발견하였다. 엄마대학원생은 우선, 대학원생인 엄마로서 생산과 재생산의 딜레마, 우울감과 자격지심, 모성비난과 자책감을 경험한다. 또 자녀를 보육시설에 맡기고 공부를 할 수 밖에 없는 상황에 대해 주변으로부터 받는 나쁜 엄마라는 모성비난과 자신의 욕심 때문에 자녀를 희생시킨다는 자책감도 공부하는 엄마이기 때문에 겪게 되는 경험으로 나타났다. 다음, 엄마인 대학원생으로서 대학원동료와 교수의 이해부족을 대면하게 되고, 대학원과 어린이집이라는 상이한 시간체계를 살고, 엄마대학원생의 젠더수행이 고려되지 않은 공간에서 모성성의 소외를 경험한다. 이러한 발견을 통해 국외의 연구에서 나타난 부분과 유사점도 있지만, 국내 대학원 교육의 특성에 따른 상이한 경험들도 있는 것으로 나타났다. Graduate student parents are a newly emerging population with the increase of higher education for females; the time period for a female to accumulate human capitals as the next generation of the academia overlaps with the time period for reproduction. Graduate student moms are in charge of both tasks as a graduate student and a mother at the same time. However, the government and the higher educational institutions are not equipped with the supportive policies and programs for them to help keeping the balance between the different tasks in the academia and home. Therefore, the mothers are under the circumstance of having a lack of understanding from the colleagues and their supervisors. And, they are having a difficulty handling different time schedules of daycare and the graduate school programs. Besides, student moms are marginalized on campus where maternity and gender performances are not considered. Also, their existential distresses, the insecure feeling of not-belonging either group, are reported to have been caused by their financial helplessness, dual duties, and the isolation from the institution.
