Reinforced concrete members are shortened or elongated due to creep, drying shrinkage, temperature and so on. In many cases, bridge superstructures are free to shortening and elongation without constraint and stresses will not be induced by creep, drying shrinkage and temperature. But if bridge superstructure are constraint due to wrong setting and functional defects of bridge bearing, very large constraint forces can be induced. In this paper, some defects due to constraint are presented and the effects of restraint forces on shear and flexural load carrying capacity are investigated.

Reinforced concrete deck slabs are directly affected by traffic loads and they are also susceptible to weather-related problems, such as cracking, reinforcement corrosion, spalling, scaling, delamination, leakage, efflorescence and so on. Some of these defects are caused by water which seeps through pavements and trapped between pavements and deck slabs. For durability of reinforced concrete deck slabs and pavements, it is very important to protect deck slabs and drain the trapped water out. In order to investigate the effects of the trapped water on the durability and safety of RC deck slab, deck slab and pavement conditions of six bridges are inspected and some tests are performed to determine chloride content, reinforced potential, concrete deterioration and concrete cover thickness of RC deck slab. The effects of the defects caused by the trapped water on the bending and punching shear strength of RC deck slab are also studied.
