단어의 종류에 따라 달라지는 영어의 어두 지음 길이에 대한 발화 속도의 영향 -기능어 대 내용어-

내용어의 분절음의 길이가 기능어의 분절음 길이보다 길다는 사실은 Umeda (1975) 이후 널리 알려져 있지만 그러한 길이 차이가 발화 속도가 달라졌을 경우에도 동일하게 유지되는지에 대한 연구는 아직까지 이루어지지 않았다. 본 논문에서는 모음과 모음사이 의 환경에서 나타나는 어두 자음 (V#CV)의 길이가 발화 속도 변화에 따라 어떻게 달라 지는지를 단어의 종류별로 나누어 비교해보았다. 폐쇄음의 경우 폐쇄구간과 VOT로 나누어 각각의 길이를 측정하였으며 공명음을 포함한 모든 자음의 길이를 측정하였다. 이렇게 얻은 길이를 통해 자음 집단별로 얻은 평균값을 3가지 발화 속도간 비교하고, 단어의 종류에 따라서는 어떤 차이가 있는지 역시 살펴보았다. 기존의 연구 결과인 분절음 길이가 내용어에서 보다 기능어에서 더 길게 나타난다는 사실은 발화 속도가 느려지거나 빨라졌을 때 역시 그대로 유지되었으나 매우 느리게 발화할 경우 기능어에서 나타나는 공명음의 길이가 내용어보다 더 길게 나타났다. 이는 화자가 발화 속도를 느리게 하려는 의도로 모든 단어들을 천천히 말하면서 기능어 또한 과도하게 길게 발음하게 되었기 때문에 나타나는 현상으로 보이며, 이런 현상이 특정 화자에 국한되는 것인지 혹은 모든 화자들이 발화 속도를 느리게할 경우 자연스럽게 기능어의 공명음들의 길이가 이처럼 길어지는 것인지는 화자별 분석을 통해 밝혀야 할 것이며, 또한 발화 속도가 빠른 사람들의 집단과 발화 속도가 느린 사람들의 집단간 비교를 통해서 확인해 보고자 한다. 발화 속도가 느려질수록 길이가 변하는 정도는 기능어에서나 내용어에서 모두 공명음의 경우가 장애음보다 크게 나타났다. 발화 속도에 가장 영향을 적게 받는 자음 집단은 기존 연구 에서와 동일하게 유성 폐쇄음으로 나타났다. 현재 모음의 길이에 대한 고찰을 통해 자음 집단 들과 모음 집단들이 발화 속도의 변화에 따라 어떻게 달라지는지 비교 연구 중에 있다 본 논문에서 사용된 데이터는 자동으로 세그멘테이션한 후 수정을 가하여 다량의 데이터를 통일된 기준에 따라 빠르게 분석할 수 있었고, 분절음의 길이 또한 다양한 환경에서 각 분절음의 길이를 얻을 수 있는 프로그램을 이용하여 자동적으로 길이를 측정하였다. 변인을 달리하여 여러 환경에서의 길이를 자동적으로 얻을 수 있으므로, 이렇게 얻어진 길이는 실질적인 음성 시스템 연구에서 다양하게 사용할 수 있다.

대학영어 단계별 교육과정에 대한 학습자 인식 및 만족도 연구: C대학 사례를 중심으로

This study aims to examine the learner perceptions and satisfactions of the level-differentiated college English classes and suggests more effective education program based on the survey results. The level-differentiated English program was designed to correspond to students’ needs and abilities and carried out as a pilot study. The classes were offered for four terms(20hours/ term), and each term had a six-tiered course. An online questionnaire was administered to 205 students. The results show that almost all the students were quite satisfied with the adequacy of the placement test. However, there was not statistically meaningful differences in students’ satisfaction with the level test. Students in lower levels such as level 1 and 2 were highly satisfied with the class operation and course in general, and seemed to get more benefits from the level-differentiated classes than intermediate and high level students. This result implies the level-differentiated curriculum is more necessary and effective for lower level students.

This paper presents a method of automatically assessing non-native speech produced by Korean learners of English. After an input utterance is processed by an automatic aligner to produce information on phoneme and word boundaries, the key modules are designed to output separate scores in each level of segmentals and prosody. For segmental evaluation, the HMM log likelihood scoring method has been adopted to properly compare input speech with native pronunciation. For prosodic scoring, rhythm metrics are employed to capture the rhythm characteristics of the learners`` native language that are expected to remain in their English utterances. The results of correlation analyses between the automatic scores and human raters`` scores suggest that the proposed method can be further applied to enhance performance of pronunciation self-education tools for EFL learners.
