An experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of background brightness on the visibility of foreground colors presented on a LCD display in the artificial weather conditions like fog and rain. As the color stimuli, 6 traffic signboard colors from the public design color standard guide and 9 basic colors with equivalent lightness and saturation were used and the participants had to rank the visibility of foreground colors in each weather condition. The results showed no difference in visibility between fog and rain conditions but the visibility of foreground colors was quite different depending on the background brightness, particularly primary colors like green, red and blue were well perceived against bright background, while yellowish colors like yellow, yellow-green, and orange were identified well against dark one. This suggests that the colors shown against different background brightness under weather conditions can be perceived differently, so we need to prioritize the use of colors on the road considering the colors used in different surrounding environment or background brightness, particularly when drivers or pedestrians use the road in different time like daytime or nighttime.

An experiment was carried out to evaluate the emotion and sensibility evoked from the different color temperatures(CCT) of electrodeless HID (ELHID) lamp. For this purpose, three ELHID lamps and a metal halide lamp were used as the experimental light sources and thirty Korean adjectives related to the lighting affectiveness were selected for the evaluation. The results showed that ELHID lamps induced different sensibilities according to their color temperature. In particular, 6500 K ELHID was similar to metal halide which has the CCT of 5600 K in the evaluation. Based on the results, we suggested some Korean adjectives and their corresponding English ones which are thought to be suitable for the verbal descriptions of ELHID lamps.

In this paper, we propose optimization methods to replicate various spectrums of standard lighting using various LEDs and introduce a lighting booth system to support various standard lighting sources. Based on given LEDs, we propose sparse coding technigues to minimize reconstruction error and the number of LED sources for simulated spectrum of standard lighting sources. A lighting booth that simulated nine kinds of standard lamp. Color discrimination performance of the developed lighting booth with a commercial lighting booth through FM(Farnsworth-Munsell) 100 Hue Test. The experimental results showed that the developed lighting booth by proposed optimization method provided better performance in human color perception than the conventional lighting booth.
