Facing the reality that, due to a rapid increase in the senior citizen population in Korea, within 10 years Korea will enter a super high aged society with more than 10 million senior citizens, current research focuses on local scoped research on a micro scale including research on facilities for senior citizens and the development of residential facilities, rather than on related restoration and planning at the environmental level for senior citizens. To prepare for the continued aging of the senior population and Baby boomer generation, there is an imminent need to prepare an active countermeasure through a comprehensive solution that takes into consideration the activities and residential and living space areas of senior citizens, rather than to continue research in the direction of the previously local approach. Current society and culture accommodates the urban inflow of senior citizens such as retirees, and self-sustaining economic virtuous cycles provide cities with sustainable models. In this research study, based on the analysis of case studies on the forms of leisure and cultural activities of retirees in the United States and on the physical characteristics of the residential environments of senior citizens selected from domestic and overseas case studies, the leisure culture planning characteristics of senior citizen living spaces in the United States were examined and derived.

The settlement spaces of retired residents no longer has basis in previous traditional relationships with neighborhoods and surroundings or basis in attachments to a particular location or region, and the currently ‘Aging in place’ phenomenon is transitioning into a concept of retirement where retirees move to the suburban areas in order to fulfill their retirement life needs and desires. While the idea of the retirement space of retirees has expanded in perception from a residential and neighborhood unit scope to a broader regional scope based upon the daily desires of the retirees, related research in this field is still limited to abstract forms and attempts. This research study analyzes the types and scopes of suburban area senior citizen residential environments of urban retirees by taking into consideration the current social situation of Korea while also reflecting the current state and condition of relevant transportation systems, and this research study examines and deduces the physical characteristics of the residential environments of senior citizen living spaces.
