Recombinant Escherichia coli BLR(DE3) harboring the hemA gene from Rhodobacter capsulatus under the control of a constitutive promoter, which we constructed previously, was used for the extracellular production of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA). The effects of several factors on ALA production were investigated in flask culture. ALA production by the recombinant E. coli was more efficient at 30℃ than 37℃. The glycine concentration had an important effect on cell growth. Glycine and succinic acid concentration of 5-10 and 10-20 g/L, respectively, resulted in high ALA production. In addition, the partial replacement of succinic acid by sodium glutamate increased the ALA production. The ALA production was inhibited by the presence of glucose in the medium. Using the optimal conditions, an ALA concentration of 8.2 g/L was achieved in jar fermentation without an added inducer or ALA dehydratase inhibitor; this is the highest reported concentration.

This study presents the topographical relationships between the recurrent layngeal nerve and the inferior thyroid artery in 36 Korean cadavers which were used for dissection in Yonsei University, Medical College from 1964 to 1967. 36 right and 32 left sides were observed in this study except 4 unavialable specimens or sides for observation. 1. The most frequent type of the topographical relationship, in which the recurrent laryngeal nerve passed behind the inferior thyroid artery, was Type II and 15 instances (41.7 j) of the right sides and 15 instances (46.9%) of the left sides. 2. The Type III, which was secondly found and in which the recurrent laryngeal nerve passed between the terminal twigs of the inferior thyroid artery, was 14 sides (38.8%) of the right ones and 11 sides (34.4%) of the left ones. 3. The Type I, which was thirdly found and in which the recurrent laryngeal nerve passed in front of the inferior thyroid artery, was 4 cases (11.1%) of the right sides and 4 cases (12.5%) of the left sides. Consequently the authors 'compared the results obtained in Korean with the other results and discussed the importance of the topographical relationships of the recurrent laryngeal nerve and inferior thyroid artery in the thyroid surgery.
