In order to design and install the hatch covers on large container carriers, hatch coaming deformation and hatch cover movement by ship motion should be considered. In general, the relative deformation of hatch coaming top plate is considerable because of vertical bending moment, horizontal bending moment and torsional moment acting on the vessel. In this study, global strength analysis is carried out in accordance with the procedure of Germanischer Lloyd to assess hatch coaming deformation and hatch cover movement. As the increasing demand of large container carriers and owners performance requirement, the effective control of the hatch coaming deformation and torsional strength of the vessel is necessary.
