This paper presents a new simple algorithm for a semi-active suspension system control. This control algorithm utilizes only vertical wheel velocity instead of vertical body velocity and relative velocity between body and wheel that are required for conventional semi-active controller based on Skyhook theory. A theoretical explanation on the basic idea of new algorithm is made in terms of basic suspension isolation characteristics and in comparison with the Sky-hook algorithm. A quarter car dynamic model with two degrees-of-freedom is simulated to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Ride quality in term of the 1/3 octave band RMS acceleration of the sprung mass is compared with specification by the IS02631 and RMS tire deflection and RMS suspension travel are compared with those of Sky-hook algorithm and passive suspension system.
