청소년 자원봉사활동의 현황과 과제 : Status Quo and Issues

The purpose of this study is to analyze the volunteer activities of the junior and senior high school students, with specific focus on: 1) attitude to volunteer activities, 2) motivation to participate in volunteer activities, 3) types of and satisfaction with volunteer activities, 4) evaluation on volunteer activities, and 5) measures to actuate the juvenile volunteer activities. The data were collected from 681 junior and senior high school students in Taegu. And the 7.5 version for Window of Statistical Package for Social Sciences was employed for data analysis. The major findings of the study are as follows. 1. The juvenile volunteers think free will and altruism are very important characteristics of volunteer activities. But continuance of volunteer activities isn’t accounted much by the junior and senior high school students. The students have the positive and active attitude to volunteer activities, rather than negative and passive attitude. 2. The egoistic motivation prompts the students to participate in volunteer activities, such as ‘in order to experience new emotion’ or ‘in order to get good marks in entrance examination for school of higher grade or employment examination. The major types of juvenile volunteer activities are to guide action and study of children, to visit the social welfare institutions, or to participate in environment movement. And they usually participate in volunteer activities during the period of vacation. 3. About half of the juvenile volunteers are satisfied with their activities. But some of the juvenile volunteers are dissatisfied because ’the activities fall short of their expectations,’ or ’the activities are not enjoyable.’ 4. Most of the juvenile volunteers say volunteer activities are socially necessary, and they want to ask to join the volunteer activities to their family and friends who do not have any experience of volunteer activities. And the students want that the volunteer activities will be reflected in the entrance examination for school of higher grade and school records. 5. The students want that the volunteer activities are enforced in club and circle activities, or in extra activities. They also want to use the volunteer information center. And the students want the school to extend educational programs about volunteer activities, to supply the information on volunteer activities.

The purpose of this study is to compare the differences in the activities of students who are enrolled in a volunteerism course and who are not by means of five categories questionnaire. The categories of volunteer activity were measured by 1) commitment, 2) learning, 3) free will, 4) psychological benefit, 5) sacrifice, and 6) necessity. The subjects were 174 students studying at Catholic University of Taegu-Hyosung. Among 174 students, 87 were enrolled in a volunteerism course and 87 were not. The data were analyzed by frequencies, percentages, means, t-test, and Cronbach's α. The major findings of the study were as follows: 1. The frequencies of volunteer activities of the enrolled were high than that of the not enrolled. In respect of the enrollment status, the students of higher grade showed a higher rat of taking volunteer course than the students of lower grade. 2. The student in both groups participated in the volunteer activities without any proper understanding of the meaning of volunteer services. And they did not recognize that his/her participation in volunteer activities matures his/her characters. 3. There were no significant differences between two groups as to motivation, meaning, and qualification of volunteer activities. 4. There were significant difference between two groups regarding orientation of the volunteerism prior to volunteer activities.
