This study investigates the behaviors of high strength concrete tied square columns subjected to concentric axial loads. 10 column specimens were fabricated for experimental test. Five configurations of transverse reinforcement such as A, B, C, E and F-type were considered. Three parameters considered in this study are follows; 1) Volumetric ratios of transverse reinforcement; ps, 2) Spacing of transverse reinforcement; s, 3) Type of transverse reinforcement. Following conclusions are obtained from experimental study. Ultra-high-strength concrete columns under concentric axial loads show extremely brittle behavior unless the columns are confined with transverse reinforcement that can provide sufficiently high lateral confinement pressure. Therefore, the more confinement is required in the column with the higher strength of concrete than column with the lower strength of concrete to achieve same amount of strength enhancement in both columns, respectively.

Study on Busan city Water Environment

Busan City water environment was monitored in 1979 and 1980. Streams in the City, Nak Dong River, Sa Sang industrial complex effluent, coastal sea water and off shore sea water were sampled and analyzed by Korean Standard Methods. Streams in the City has such a high BOD value that it cannot be regarded as streams but it has become sewer. Nak-Don River is polluted at Sa Sang area and other down stream. However, Mul Keom water intake tower has still clean and low BOD level. E.coli exists too much and it is necessary to have pre-treatment chlorination. Off-shore sea waters are polluted in the estuaries of Su Yeong River and Nak Dong River. PO₄level was not so high in the Nak Dong Rivers estuary but COD level was maintained at about 2. Therefore PO₄does not play important role in the eutrophication but COD (total carbon) is condidered to be a cause of eutrophication. Coastal (harbor) water quality has higher COD than Korean Environmental Standard.
