The purpose of this study is to provide architectural planning and management guidelines of apartment community indoor exercise facilities in the post-COVID-19 Era. In this study, a case study of guidelines for indoor exercise facilities in Korea and the United States was conducted based on a current usage analysis through a review of literature. Major findings produced by this study are as follows. First, placing the public space next to the sports facilities will enable fluid spatial layout. It will not only help people to keep social distancing but also cultivate a sense of community in usual. Second, guidelines about ‘removing common items and using personal items’ imply that sports facilities need more storage space to store common items in specific periods. More storage in the sports facilities will also solve the existing problem about the lack of storage space. Third, guidelines about ventilation should be considered both in the planning and the management phases to maximize the effect. Moreover, when community facilities are naturally ventilated, it will increase utilization rate by providing more opened spaces.

The main research question of this project is, if schools in the State of Michigan are designed to secure students from violent crimes or during an emergency situation. To answer this question, this research aims to examine students’ and parents’ opinions about school safety in terms of both indoor and outdoor environments. The study conducted focus groups and collected their input for creating safe school environments. Their responses were based on their experiences and perceptions. A total of 25 students, 11 parents, and 2 former students participated in focus groups. The findings highlighted a high level of visibility, accessibility, and territoriality of school buildings and campuses. Especially, a well-defined signage system was emphasized. This will help student to navigate buildings and find the accurate evacuation routes quickly. The findings also emphasized on providing accessibility to elevators or exits for the students and staff members with physical disabilities. The evacuation route should be clearly defined and exits doors should be secured. A color-coded signage system with consistent design and fonts was strongly supported.

This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of the WELL building certification whether it ensures an appropriate sleeping environment. A literature review was conducted to analyze previous research on the sleep environment, focusing on the WELL certification. Major findings of this research were as follows: The standards of WELL certification related to the sleeping environment can be classified into two main categories: built environment (Air, Light, Thermal comfort, Sound) and architectural design (Nourishment, Movement, Mind, Community). Analysis of the research in the built environment field revealed that, despite minute variations in the numerical results, the parameters meet the WELL certification requirements. In contrast, contrasting outcomes were identified in the architectural design field, as the impact of architectural design on sleep quality is complex and indirect. Nevertheless, the architectural design standards by the WELL certification were found to promote residents’ health, which is deeply linked to improvements in sleep quality. Therefore, it can be inferred that the architectural design standards on the WELL certification would have a positive impact on improving the sleep quality of the residents.

The purpose of this study is to examine domestic and foreign codes and regulations regarding semi-basement housing and rooftop units, and to discuss the points that these two housing types need to be improved and considered in the future to function as safe housing. Keyword searches and analysis were conducted. As a result of reviewing the current building and residential codes and regulations of vulnerable housing, focusing on semi-basement housing and rooftop housing, the identified problems were related to 1) the minimum housing standards that are not suitable for the current situation and 2) the evacuation and fire protection standards that are difficult to apply to these two housing types. Above all, considering that both semi-basement and rooftop units are vulnerable to flooding and fire, it is urgent to prepare safety-related standards for vulnerable dwellings. Inclusive and detailed codes and regulations should be established so that semi-basement and rooftop units can serve as safe housing for residents in the future.

This study focuses on the health and well-being of the occupants residing in WELL certified residential buildings in the United States. For data collection, a thorough literature review and case studies of WELL-certified buildings in the residential field have been conducted. A total of 30 residential projects in the US are registered with WELL Building certification. This study targets seven certified residential projects, which consists of 1 platinum, 2 gold, and 3 silver level certified. These projects meet the WELL v1 certification standard which focuses on ‘air, water, nourishment, fitness, light, comfort, and mind.’ Major findings based on the analysis of seven projects are as follow: Both Air and Water categories provide a more refined indoor environment using filters. Nourishment promotes healthy eating programs. Fitness focuses on the fitness center with a variety of exercise equipment, and encourages residents to have more physical activities by inducing connection to the external environment. In the Light category, incorporating natural light in design is highly encouraged as well as circadian lighting is taken into consideration for better health outcomes of the residents. Comfort is achieved through noise isolation and the provision of a personalized space. Lastly, for Mind relaxation, it emphasizes indoor and outdoor green spaces, such as biophilic design for residential spaces.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of interior design curriculum and courses in Korea using case studies and conduct an intensive case study in a CIDA-accredited interior design program in the United States. The Interior Design Program at Michigan State University was chosen for the case study because it has been accredited since 1975 and has successfully renewed their accreditation a few years ago. The analysis of Korean curriculum shows that many interior design programs offer three categories of the courses: (1) theories and issues, (2) technique and skills, and (3) implications and practices. In Michigan State Interior Design Program, the main components of the curriculum and courses are based on the Professional Standards by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation, like other CIDA-accredited programs in the US. Their courses emphasize implications and practices so that students can start their professional career right after graduation. Course titles and contents are flexible, within the criteria that CIDA requires for the accreditation. The findings from these case studies indicate the strong need for interior design curriculum in Korea to provide diverse topics that CIDA"s standards recommend. Design studio projects should integrate other course contents and promote practical solutions so that students could be ready for their career right after graduation.
