For new brake disc development, the selection of proper friction coefficient and durability in the vehicle design is most important factor to be considered. However, at the present time, not much attention has been given in the study of this field. In this investigation, various types of friction coefficients of railway brake discs, which were newly developed, were examined and characterized. Three different types of brake discs were developed to enhance braking performance, and the braking tests were conducted with a full-scale dynamometer. The braking test was carried out according to Korean railway standards (KRS) guideline. In this paper, the effect of friction coefficients with different types of brake disc was investigated, and the results will be used for the development of new brake disc as well as the related standards

In this study, we investigated the cause analysis on fracture of diesel locomotive engine liner, which was trouble assuming the inflow of cooling water. In order to reveal the cause of fracture, we studied the use history of engine, the drawing of production appearance and the stress distribution of engine in use. Also, we conducted experiments such as tension strength test, bending test and hardness test. Next, we observed fractured sections by SEM for the purposed of explaining the fracture mechanism of engine liner. Test results showed that fracture mechanism was brittle fracture due to coarse casting structure and stress concentration caused by manufacturing badness.

TEEE(Thermoplastic ether-ester elastomer) is expected to reduce the noise and vibration from railway because its unique properties such as porosity. In this study, after building TEEE rail pad at established rail, we conducted practical test and vibration test to inquire the field application and endurance of TEEE material. The test results showed that TEEE material was lower vibration than EVA material. therefore, TEEE material was effective from a vibration reduction point of view.
디스크 타입에 따른 철도차량용 디스크 브레이크 라이닝의 마찰계수 특성에 관한 연구

In this study, we investigate the change characteristic of friction coefficient of disk brake lining for rolling stock according to disk type. The actual brake tests were carried out under constant brake force and operating sequence by using dynamo-tester. Test results showed that instant friction coefficient was higher in the case of devided disk type rather than single body disk type. Also, averge friction coefficient was appeared similer to the above result. It is thought that ,in the case of devided disk type, friction resistance was increased due to the gap between both side of half disk.

In this study, we investigate the mechanical properties of rail pad material according to pad types. Especially, to study the application and endurance of TEEE material, we conducted experiments such as tension strength test, hardness test, fatigue test and wear test. Test results showed that TEEE material was better application and endurance than other pad material, but there was difficulties for comparing with others because the variations of application according to pad" types were variable.

Brake friction materials in railway applications are one of critical elements for acceleration and/or deceleration of vehicle, stop at designated position, and stability of vehicle operation. In this investigation, a comprehensive overview on international standards on brake friction materials, including UIC, JI, and AAR, was conducted to understand the current standards creation trend and collect the related information on brake friction materials with different applictions. Moreover, the detailed conditions such as testing conditions and environment, testing items, and materials, were carefully reviewed and compared by each standard. The preliminary results will be used for the creation of Korean railway standards (KRS) on brake shoe materials.

This paper describes the result of carbody and vibration test for freight car. The purpose of the test is to evaluate an safety which carbody structure shall be considered fully sufficient rigidity so as to load a freight car under maximum load and operating condition on line track. The test carbody is constructed by RS korea co., LTD. in accordance with KNR specfication. The test cases of the carbody is tested the vertical load and compressive load to verify the strength and stiffness. The vibration test is tested for analysis and evaluation of vibration, to allow for the fact that mechanical vibration in railway vehicles have specific characteristics.

The structural strength assessment of a carbody was performed using F.E. analysis and static test to verify the structural safety of newly manufactured carbody of a freight car. The freight car for the transportation of cold-rolled coils in steel making company was designed with SS400 steel for underframe and SM490A steel for bracket. Prior to the evaluation of structural strength, commercial finite element method(FEM) software was used for the stress and structural analyses on stress distribution in a carbody of freight car. The strain gages were attached on the carbody based on the FEM results. The actual vertical loading test and horizontal compression loading test were conducted, and the stress and displacement were obtained. Finally, the structural strength of carbody was evaluated by using a engineering techniques.

Reduction of CO₂ emission is one of major issues in the whole industries, especially transport system. Railroad companies in the advanced countries such as EU, Japan, etc. have made great efforts on the improvement of their systems including energy sources, operational efficiency and PR of achievement resulted. Recently, to emphasize the environment-friendly characteristics of the railroad as public transport, the importance of PR is emerging. The achievements were listed in annual, sustainability and corporate responsibility reports. And the superiority of railroad in CO₂ emission can be confirmed in web sites and simple advertizing materials. In this study, we proposed the PR programs of achievement and ongoing works in Korean railroad through the case studies on web-based and off-line programs of railroad companies in EU and Japan.
