First of all, experimental study on the fatigue behavior of SM 490 A was carried out on double V-grooved butt welded plates such as reinforcement removed, as-welded and weld toe ground. In addition, welded plates with transverse fillet welded web, load carrying cruciform fillet welded plates, non-load carrying cruciform fillet welded plate and longitudinal butt welded plates were tested. The obtained S-N curves for the weld details are compared each other. To evaluate the fatigue life a simple model considering residual stress relaxation was proposed and applied. Estimated results show the developed model seems to be applicable.

In case of the fatigue life evaluation of rolling stock structures, mainly deterministic fatigue life evaluation has been carried out. But most of the parameters influencing on the fatigue life have a probabilistic distribution such as normal, log-normal, Weibull, etc. Therefore, to take probabilistic factors into fatigue life evaluation, probabilistic methods are being applied to the fatigue life evaluation of rolling stock. In this paper, probabilistic S-N analysis and methods using limit state functions are introduced. And some results of fatigue life evaluation obtained with these methods for rolling stock structures are shown.

To evaluate the fatigue lifetime of structures, it is necessary to identify the value of parameters through tests or literature. it is difficult for field engineers to get the necessary data through tests from the viewpoint of time and cost. In this study, we surveyed literature and proposed a procedure to identify the fatigue parameters for fatigue life evaluation by local strain approach and then we evaluated the fatigue lifetime for several kinds of welded joints. The simulated results are in a good agreement with experimental results.

Brake squeal noise of KTX is very uncomfortable to passengers and workers in stations. A lot of study has been conducted to inquire into the mechanism of the squeal noise. But understanding of the brake squeal noise is still challenging. In this study, we developed a full-scale tester equipped with a KTX mechanical brake unit. And we measured the vibrational characteristics of each component of the brake unit and compared them with frequency response functions of brake squeal noise measured also in the tester. It was found that the brake squeal noise was more closely related to the vibrational characteristics of the brake pads and hangers in friction condition than those of free components.

Residual stresses play an important role in the mechanical behaviour of steels. To examine the effect of residual stresses on tensile behaviour, residual stresses in the specimens were generated by welding. Experimental stress-strain curves of the specimens with/without residual stresses were obtained and compared to simulated curves obtained by the finite element analysis. The two results are in a good agreement. Finally, to study the relaxation of the residual stresses during fatigue crack propagation, we carried out fatigue crack propagation analysis by the finite element analysis.

In the case of axisymmetric thermal analysis of drum brakes, the distribution of frictional heat produced in the interface and temperature difference between mating frictional faces are very interesting problems to computational researchers. In the first part, heat conduction from the interface to the pad and the drum was modeled by using a thin interface element, so artificial division of the generated heat flux between pad and drum is not necessary. Temperature difference between mating frictional faces is successfully modeled by using the interface element. In the second part the influence of some parameters on the thermal distribution is checked. The analysis was performed by ABAQUS/Standard code.
