Recently compact fluorescent lamps are widely used in downlight luminaires, so the needs of dimming of electronic ballasts for the lamps are greatly increased. This paper presents a new approach in the design of electronic ballasts for dimming compact fluorecent lamps by using PSpice simulation to determine the circuit parameters of the resonant-tank circuit. A prototype of an electronic dimming ballast which adopts half-bridge inverter topology is set up to compare the results of PSpice simulation with experimental ones, and thus to verify the validity of the proposed method.

Recently, lighting systems of vehicles have been developed toward low power, high energy-saving, and efficient control of light distribution. This paper aims to survey such trends, and to present prospects of advanced lighting systems of vehicles. Emphasis is laid upon the use of high-brightness LED and HID lamps which will be sportlighted in the near future as signal lamps and head lamps of vehicles, respectively. The discussion includes future prospects of lamps and luminaires, and the control of lighting system of vehicles.

The purpose of this paper is to determine circuit parameters in the inverter part of the electronic dimming ballast for fluorescent lamps, that is adequate to use with the prevailing dimming controller IC. Firstly, the operating frequency characteristics are investigated by varying circuit parameters of electronic ballasts and are matched with the output characteristics of dimming ballast controller. Secondly, circuit parameter values are determined by using PSpice simulation and operating frequency characteristics. Finally its validity is verified from the electrical and light output characteristics on the prototype of the electronic dimming ballast.
