Strategies for Conservation and Restoration of Freshwater Fish Species in Korea

The tiny fragment of freshwater body is providing home for huge biodiversity and resources for the existence of human. The competing demand for freshwater have been increased rapidly and it caused the declination of biodiversity in recent decades. Unlike the natural process of extinction in gradual progress, the current species extinction is accelerated by human activity. As a result many fish species are already extinct or alive only in captivity in the world and about fifty eight animal species are in endangered in Korea including eighteen freshwater species. Conservation of biodiversity is the process by which the prevention of loss or damage is attained, and is often associated with management of the natural environment. The practical action is classified into in-situ, or ex-situ depending on the location of the conservation effort. Recovery means the process by which the status of endangerment is improved to persist in the wild by re-introduction of species from ex-situ conservation population into nature or translocation of some population. However there are a lot of restrictions to complete it and successful results are known very rare in case. In this article the authors explore some strategies for conservation and restoration of freshwater fish species conducted in Korea for few years. The major causes are discussed in relation with the decline of freshwater fish diversity during few decades and some strategies are evaluated to advance the process of conservation. A study on the Korean bullhead, Pseudobagrus brevicorpus, is introduced as a case for ex-situ conservation and restoration in freshwater ecosystem.

낙동강 하구둑은 1987년 건설되어 20년이 경과하였으며, 그간 하구둑의 생태계 피해에 대한 논란이 많았으나 중요한 역할이 기대되는 하구둑 어도의 기능과 개선에 관한 고려 는 전혀 없었다. 본 조사는 낙동강 하구둑을 중심으로 상류 와 하류의 어류상을 조사하고, 이들 어류가 하구둑에 설치 된 계단식 및 통선갑문의 어도를 이용하는 실태를 분석함 으로서 추후 연구 및 개선 방안에 대해 고찰하고자 하였다. 조사 결과 낙동강 하구둑 상류부에서 출현한 어류는 31 종으로 이 중 71%가 1차담수어이어서 완전 담수화되었음을 알 수 있었으며, 웅어, 뱅어 등 일부 어종은 담수역으로 소상하여 산란이 이루어지고 있었다. 하구둑 가까운 수역에 서는 9종의 연안성 어류가 나타나 하류와의 소통이 가능한 것으로 나타났다. 하구둑 하류부는 조사된 36종의 어류 중 1차담수어 6종을 제외하고는 모두 연안어종이어서 이전 기 수역에서 완전 해수역으로 바뀌었음을 나타내고 있었다. 출 현한 1차담수어는 부유성 어종들로 계절적으로 제한되어 출현하는 점으로 미루어 담수 방류의 영향을 받는 것으로 사료되었다. 하구둑에 어류의 이동을 위해 설치된 어도를 이용하는 어류는 모두 39종으로 상 하류에서 관찰된 종수보다 많았 으며, 양안에 설치된 계단식 어도에서는 19종이, 통선갑문 에서는 32종이 관찰되어 통선갑문의 어도 기능이 중요함을 보였다. 특히 통선갑문에서는 뱅어류의 치어와 멸치가 다량으로 채집되어 회유 통로로서의 중요성이 부각되었다. 하구 둑에서의 어류 이동을 위한 통로로 하향식 구조인 계단식 보다는 쌍방 유통형인 통선갑문의 효율적인 운영과 관리 중요성을 논의하였다. The estuaries bank of Nakdong River, Korea, was constructed in 1987 and many arguments have been under discussion on the subject of ecological impact on ecosystem during 20 years. In this context, however, it was not focused on the role of fish-way and the way of improvement to promote fish movement to complete its life history. This paper was the result of investigation on fish fauna of upper and lower part of the bank and the analysis of comparison of the fishes with those using fish-way which were installed in each side of bank as ladder type and fish gate. The authors discussed the importance of fish gate and its management base on the result. The number of fishes collected in this study for upper part of estuaries bank was 31 species, among them 71% was the pure freshwater residents indicating the characteristics of the area as a freshwater ecosystem. It was observed that 9 species of coastal fishes were found in this region including Coilia ectens and Neosalanx sp. which is anadromous to spawn. Excluding 6 freshwater fishes, 30 fish species collected in lower part of estuaries bank were coastal fishes indicating that former brackish ecosystem was changed into marine one. The freshwater fishes found in this region were restricted the appearance only in the season of discharging freshwater into the sea. The number of fishes found in fish-way was 39 species, more than that of river and coast. But only 19 species founded in fish ladder was comparable with the result of investigation on fish gate including 32 species. It was considered that the fish gate has more important role as a fish passage from the fact that only it allowed to movement of numerous number of fry of Neosalanx sp. and Engraulis japonicus, These results indicates that twoway movement system is more efficient than downward only one in estuaries bank for fish migration.

Abstract - We investigated the effect of the Geum river Estuary Barrage, on the migration and spawning of the Chinese mitten crab from May 2007 to January 2009. The larvae were caught on May in the lower reachs of the estuary barrage, but the juveniles were not collected in the upper reaches of the estuary barrage. Adult crabs arrived at the Geum river estuary for spawning in early September, and spawned between March and April. Therefor if there are corridors which let the juveniles move to the upper stream, the crab population might be restored to the former state that they grow up to adults in the freshwater, and could be migrated easily to marine habitat for spawning.
