N/A In twenty-nine patients who did not have an intracardiac shunt, arrhythmia, aortic insufficiency or mitral insufficiency, noninvasive cardiac output (thoracic electrical bioimpedance (TEB)) was compared to invasively measured cardiac output (dye dilution method). The results obtained were as follows: 1) Cardiac output values obtained with the Sramek-Bernstein equation of TEB were significantly correlated with those measured by the dye dilution method (r=0.83, p < 0.001). 2) Cardiac output values obtained with kubicek`s equation of TEB were significantly correlated with those measured by the dye dilution method (r=0.86, p< 0.001) 3) The correlation coefficient (r) for cardiac output values obtained by Kubicek`s equation and the Sramek-Bernstein equation of TEB was+0.91. 4) The percentage of data points falling within 204 confidence limits on either side of the line of identity between cardiac ouput derived from TEB and the dye dilution method were as follows in accordance with the equation of TEB: Sramek-Bernstein equation: 76% Kubicek`s equation: blood resistivity…Denniston et al: 69% Geddes and Sadler: 4096 Hill and Thompson: 10%. These data indicate that TEB can provide a noninvasive measure of cardiac ouput when there are no shunts, valvular insufficiencies or arrhythmias. There was no statistically significant difference between cardiac out- put obtained by the Sramek-Bernstein equation and Kubicek`s equation of TEB.
