The feasibility for improving the cooling rates and mechanical properties of wet welding process is experimentally investigated by using new developed underwater wet electrodes and H. T. steel plates.<br/> Main results of this experimental study can be summarized as follows;<br/> 1) By shielding around weld arc surrounding, the cooling rates resulting from wet welds with developed electrodes on TMCP steel plates can be lower than that of non-shielded wet welds.<br/> 2) A high quality of mechanical properties of wet welds on TMCP steel plates can be obtained with shielded weld arc surrounding.

In this paper, an attempt has been taken for improving the weldability of wet welds of TMCP steel plate by shielding around weld arc surroundings. The principal results of this experimental investigation can be summarized as follows :<br/> 1) The cooling rates resulting from wet welds with the developed electrode on TMCP steel plate could be lower than that of the non-shieled wet welds.<br/> 2) The metallurgical characteristics in underwater wet welds of TMCP steel plate and the developed electrode could be improved by shielding around weld arc surroundings.

Underwater wet arc welds of rolled steel plate (SM41) where studied welding and mechanical properties macro and narrow than that of the other things. Tensile strength of UWEB obtained to 521.5㎫ and of USBL was 524.1㎫, but the highest elongation value was 4.68%(UWEB). Bending strength(1166.6㎫) of USBL is the largest and of UWEB in l047㎫, But diffraction(22.73㎜) of UWEB in large than that of USBL(22.63㎜). Impact value(l44.36J/㎠) of JPUW is the largest and of UWEB(l40J/㎠) come after.

The feasibility for a practical use of underwater wet arc welding process is experimentally investigated by using low hydrogen and high oxide type electrodes and TMCP steel plates. Main results are summarized as follows :<br/> 1) The absorption speed of the coated low hydrogen and high titanium oxide type electrodes becomes constant after about 30 minutes in water, and more steeping time in water does not influnce welding arc behavior.<br/> 2) By bead appearance and X-ray inspection, the high titanium oxide type electrode is better than the low hydrogen type in underwater wet arc welding process.<br/> 3) The mechanical properties of underwater wet arc welds depend upon welding conditions more than those of in-air welds, and the optimum welding condition can be obtained.<br/> 4) Because of quenching effect by rapid cooling rate in underwater wet welding, the maximum hardness of HAZ is increased relatively higher in underwater wet welding process.

Underwater wet arc welds were experimentally performed on 11mm thick KR-RA steel plate by using six different types of flux coated electrodes of 4.0mm diameter, KSKR, KSKT, USBL, JPUW, UWEA, and UWEB. As results, In aspect of bead appearance, detachability of slag, spatter producing and arc stability JPUW was the best condition and UWEB obtained more superior weldability than KSKR and KSKT. In bond zone, the hardness distribution of underwater wet multi-pass butt-welding had high hardness value in the most electrodes and UWES was distributed to the hardness contribution of the most favorable and stability. Upon polarization test to measure the responsiveness of corrosion, the electrodes of UWEB was showed the most excellent degree because of the low open circuit dislocation.

Underwater wet arc welds were experimentally performed on 11mm thick SS400 mild steel plate as base metal by using six different types of flux coated electrodes of 4.0mm diameter; KSKR, KSKT, USBL, JPUW, UWEA, and UWES. As results, the developed flux coated underwater electrode had a good weldability compared with other domestic terrestrial electrodes. By rapid cooling rate, the hardness value of HAZ were increased by quenching effects. Mechanical properties for the multi-pass butt-welding specimen are also tested experimentally. The feasibility of the developed underwater electrode was experimentally studied and the results achieved in this wet arc welds have shown that the developed wet welding electrode UWEB can have a degree of integrity.

The feasibility of underwater are welding process is experimentally investigated. It is ascertained that this process may be put to practical use. Main results are summar ① Sound weld can be abtained by skilled welding operator,if proper welding conditions are selected. ② The mechanical preperties of weld are depend upon welding conditions and optimum welding condition can be abtained.
