본 논문은 五四新文化運動時期에 대표적인 학자 魯迅과 胡適이 《西遊記》 硏宄와 긴밀한 상관관계가 있는 저술《中國小說史略》第16篇~第18篇〈明之神魔小說〉(魯迅)과 〈《西遊記》 考證〉(胡適)을 발표한 것에 주목하여 그들의 대표적인 두 저작을 중심으로 《西遊記》 연구에 관한 새로운 史料에 근거하여 연구를 진행하고자 한다. 그 때에 魯迅과 胡適이 제기한 획기적인 학술관점은 분명 후대의 《西遊記》 연구에 결정적인 영향을 미쳤으니 두 저술이 발표된 지 이미 일백년이 지났지만 그 논지의 여파는 아직까지도 계속되고 있다. 하지만 魯迅과 胡適은 주객관적 요소의 제약을 받아 그들이 제기한 주요 학술관점은 관련된 문헌자료가 속속 세상에 알려지고 연구자들의 상세한 연구를 거친 뒤에 그중에서 확실히 수정 논의할 부분이 있다는 사실을 알게 되었다. 본 논문은 이 점에 착안하여 새롭게 발견된 元代 佛敎石塔 「西遊」 故事를 浮雕한 한국 高麗時代의 「敬天寺」 「十層佛塔」과 100년 후 이를 모조하여 건축한「圓覺寺」 「十層佛塔」의 浮彫와 築塔銘文에 근거하여 두 학자의 논점을 수정 보완하여 향후 《西遊記》 연구의 발전에 기여하고자 한다. This paper attempts to look into the academic contributions on their studies of The Journey to the West of two important scholars, Lu Xun and Hu Shih, mainly the three chapter on Ming of the former’s A Short History of Chinese Fiction and On The Journey to the West of the latter.

This article aims to investigate the source materials of Six Dynasties fiction. Source material study has been one of the major and traditional approaches in the study of Chinese fiction. A usual way of conducting source material study in the past has been to look into the sources of the material and then trace the changes and explain the reason why and how the later authors made the change. The article here divides the source materials of the Six Dynasties fiction into two kinds: written and oral sources, and tries to look into them based on the concept of “reconstructing the literary scenes.” The idea of “reconstructing” is to see how the author responds to different kinds of source materials and how he fits them into his own understanding of compiling and writing supernatural fiction. Another issue addressed in this article is to question the validity of the thesis proposed by Wang Shaoying concerning a certain piece of writing, “Presenting the tables of Shoushen ji.” This writing, according to the present author, is related to Gan Bao’s History of Jin, not his Shoushen ji.

The Journey to the West delineates the story of how Tang monk Xuanzhuang underwent all kinds of ordeals to reach India and returned with sacred Buddhist Texts. What the novel did is to reformulate a historical character and events into a literary production, and that this journey has altogether taken 14 years has generally accepted by most readers. However, as we find in the novel, historical time has always been manipulated to fit the literary needs. To most novel readers, what we concern more is whether or not the dealing with the theme, plot and characterization is convincing, but not whether the novel follows strictly the historical time. This paper will look into two important issues concerning the time: (1) the exact year Xuanzhuang departed from Changan to embark on the journey, and (2) the total years he spent in the journey. By discussing these issues, the author hopes to provide a new perspective to the study of the novel.

본 논문은 《古小???》집본(?本)의 여러 가지 문제에 대해서 검토하였다. 1966년 일찍이 일본의 저명한 학자 前野直彬이 이 문제에 대해서 논의한 바가 있는데, 이미 반세기가 지났기 때문에 다시 검토해야 할 필요성이 대두되었다. 우리가 일반적으로 접하는 《古小???》은 후대 사람들이 루쉰의 필사본을 정리하여 출간한 책이다. 그러나 정리과정에서 적지 않은 착오가 발생하였는데, 필사본은 집록과정에서 인쇄본도 그것을 정리하는 과정에서 착오가 나타난다. 이러한 부분들은 반드시 수정되어야만 하며, 이 작업이 완성되어야만 정확한 자료를 가지고 육조소설의 연구가 진행될 수 있을 것이다. 이 논문은 또한 《古小???》을 다시 집록하고 연구할 때 주의해야 할 점에 대해서도 언급하고 있는데, 앞으로 중국 중고시기 문학과 소설 연구에 기초자료로써 활용되리라 기대한다.
