The purpose of this study was to obtain the baseline data to develop a prediction model of craniofacial growth. Hand and wrist radiographs of 606 children aged from six to seven were obtained for the assessment of bone maturity. The hand and wrist radiographs were scored by the Tanner-Whitehouse TW2 method of bone maturity assessment. χ²test was used to compare skeletal maturity score of hand-wrist by age by gender. The obtained results were as follows: 1. There was significant difference between the bone maturity of radius and ulna in six year-old and seven year-old children by gender(P<0.01). 2. The bone maturity of 1st proximal phalanges, 3rd proximal phalanges, 3rd middle phalanges, 5th middle phalanges, 1st distal phalanges, 3rd distal phalanges, 5th distal phalanges, hamate, triquietral, lunate, scaphoid, trapezium, trapezoid in seven year-old children by gender were higher than those in six year-old children by gender(P<0.05). 3. The bone maturity of 5th proximal phalanges in seven year-old girls was higher than that in six year-old girls(P<0.01), but not boys(P>0,05). 4. The bone maturty of capitate in seven year-old boys was higher than that in six year-old boys(P<0.01), but not girls(P>0.05).

Fluoridation of public water supplies is a remarkably efficient method of controlling dental caries at the community level. Therefore, in recent years Korean government has a program to expand the area of water fluoridation. The purpose of this study was to prepare the basic data for expansion of water fluoridation. The Piped water fluoride ion concentrations of 1550 areas among the results of drinking water examination by environmental department in 1997, 1998 were examined. On the basis of the result, The fluoride ion concentrations of 20 piped waters of the area in which water fluoridations is to be put in operation were measured. The piped water fluoride ion concentrations of 3 Naturally fluoridated areas and 11 artificially fluoridated areas and 104 nonfluoridated areas were examined. The fluoride ion concentrations of 24 bottled drinking water were examined. The period of these examinations is from April to June in 1998. The obtained results were as follows: 1. All the fluoride ion concentrations of 20 piped waters of the area in which water fluoridations is to be put in operation were under 0.3ppm. 2. All the piped water fluoride ion concentrations of 104 nonfluoridated areas were under 0.5ppm. 3. All the piped water fluoride ion concentrations of 11 artificially fluoridated areas were from 0.6ppm to 0.9ppm. 4. The difference of the streams of the piped waters in the nonfluoridated areas were not founded. 5. The fluoride ion concentrations of Jeonlabokdo Jangsugun Janggaemyon and Chungcheong-bokdo Goysangun Bulgeongmyun were 0.6ppm. This level is enough to prevent dental caries. but, The fluoride ion concentration of Chungcheongbokdo Chungjusi Judeokeub was 4.5ppm, so this level was needed to lower. 6. All the fluoride ion concentrations of 24 bottled drinking water were under 0.4ppm except Dongwonsaemmul and Sparkle(Saemul) and Water King.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of working environments on dental caries of confectionery workers who had been exposed to much sugar. Dental examination had been surveyed to 105 female workers served at confectionery process and 105 female workers served at clothing and mobilephone manufacturing processes as a control group. DMF scores and the frequency of toothbrushing per day were examined. The DMFT rate, DMFT index, DT index, MT index, FT index, DT rate, MT rate, FT rate, and the average frequency of toothbrushing per day according to occupations and duration of employment were calculated and analyzed. Conclusions of this study summarized as follows: 1. There was no statistical difference in DMF scores between the confectionary female workers and the control group. 2. There was no statistical evidence that the exposure to sugar affected prevalence of dental caries in the confectionary female workers. 3. The DT index, MT index, and DT rate of confectionary female workers were higher than those of the clothing and mobile-phone manufacturing female workers, 4. The FT rate of confectionary female workers was lower than that of the clothing and mobile-phone manufacturing female workers. 5. The frequency of toothbrushing per day of confectionary female workers was less than that of the clothing and mobile-phone manufacturing female workers. 6. It is, therefore, necessary for confectionary female workers to be periodic oral health education.
치과위생사의 지역사회 구강보건사업 활동인력으로서의 활용정립을 위한 소고(1)

Regional oral health campaign program including expansion of services of dental hygienists should be developed to provide rights of civil oral health for the people. During past twenty years, dental hygienist educations were insufficient for the requirement of present public oral health needs. So, we should enlarge the field of dental hygienist, and through this way we will be able to provide more effective public oral health services. We must make adoptions of dental hygienists to industrial organizations, research institutes, school oral health center or public oral health centers to give them a proper vision for their job and to reduce their feeling of deprivation originated from simple role in dental clinic. And, strengthening of adminstration for installing the field of dental hygienist and personal management administrations should be more systematized. At this spot, regional oral health campaigners have to study more harder and have to improve practical talent through continuous researches and educations. Also korean dental hygienist association must drive more active business for making legal qualifications of dental hygienes to link the various fields of public oral health system.
